Though German and Norse are fairly close, they differ in their creation myths. The origins of the Norse cosmos lies in the obscure and dynamic interactions between water, ice, and fire. The result is a number of distinct sub worlds, each inhabited by a specific type of being. There is no consistent structure to the Norse universe. However, certain aspects of the Norse universe are clear. Midgard is a central land mass surrounded by a sea, were Humans and gods live. With in it lies Asgard, where the gods live, ruled over by Odin. Underneath is the underworld, ruled by the goddess, Hel. The giants have their own sub world and the dwarves live in the rocks and caves below the earth. Through all the sub worlds, the world tree, Yggdrasill towers over all, while it's roots are buried in Asgard, Midgard, and the underworld. The earliest of all living creatures were the giants. All beings came from Ymir. From his offspring, came the gods. His body was used for the principal features of the universe.
