epic adventures of Shawna.
untitled.
I watched with interest as the water pooled into the tub, the bubbles starting to multiply right before my eyes. Out of curiosity, I let my fingers reach out and graze them; they were smooth as they clustered around the digit, almost acting like a second skin as they spread around and held on. Tilting my head to the side, I moved forward to watch them glide off of me as I placed my hand under the running water. I was like a child when I was placed in water; I’d test all my theories to find them all true from past experience. It was almost like I’d never been in a bathtub throughout my life with the way I acted, even though we had many pictures of me as a child playing in one. I could never understand my feeling towards water: people thought it could easily take over you, but it protected me.

“Okay.” I called as soon as I had turned the knob to cease the flowing water. Only a fraction of a second after I had sat back down, the thick mass of bubbles covering my body, did she walk in. She smiled to me as I laid my head back against the wall, my whole body surrounded below my neck. I couldn’t smile back to her; she was attempting to break me of one of my worst fears yet again. I was uncomfortable with my own body, and I become a nervous wreck when someone else could see my bare skin. But she was being very lenient, letting me have a small blanket between us: the bubbles.

I chose to move my eyes from her as she uncovered herself mere feet in front of me. I’d seen her body a few times, and I could remember it even now; she was small, slightly tan, and flawless. Her body wasn’t like mine. My mind only dwelled on the subject for so long, because I knew what happened if I thought about comparing others to myself. I knew what it did to me, and I didn’t like it. The water rippled across my body as she stepped in, catching my attention away from my own thoughts. I blushed slightly and quickly averted my eyes as I looked up by instinct, catching another glance of her perfect skin. Soon, the light veil of bubbles also covered her form as she lay beside me, making the water move a few inches higher around us. I could barely feel her skin grazing mine, and it was enough to heighten my nerves.

“Shh,” she whispered out, already sensing my body as it tensed up, “I can’t see you, remember? I can barely feel you, either.” I nodded to the words, knowing it was all very true, but it never did anything to calm me down. Right now, I even doubted the strongest of drugs could make my body relax; we were entering uncharted territories that I thought to never be reached. And now that they had been sought out, I couldn’t back out now. Even if I had chose to, she’d see more than I’d want her to as I ran to the door. That’d be an amazing story to tell people, wouldn’t it? ‘The love of my life has only seen me naked once, and that was because I was running away so that she could.’

It felt like hours of silence was passing us by, her eyes just lingering on my face the entire time. I couldn’t do a thing about it, either, because my mouth was so dry from nerves that I didn’t think it was possible to even begin to form words. So here I lay, my eyes staring up at the ceiling to avoid looking at her, no words passing between us while we’re completely exposed. Well, nearly exposed; we still have a small layer to hide behind. And it was getting smaller by the minute, the bubbles beginning to pop and fade into the water to show a light glow of pale skin beneath them. What had I gotten myself into?

I gulped, “the…the bubbles are almost gone.” For once, her eyes drifted down to take notice to my observation to confirm it true. After a second, though, they flickered back up to smile at me, just like she’d done when she had entered the room; it was as if she had known something that I hadn’t all along. And I hated that thought, because I knew it was so true. She always had a plan for things, and I’d fallen straight into the trap by agreeing to this.

“Look at me.” I ignored the voice, continuing to stare at the pattern that was etched into our ceiling. I was afraid that she’d see my absolute fear when she saw my eyes; she’d see that I am completely helpless as I lay beside her right now. “Baby, look at me.” A sigh left my lips as I turned to connect our eyes, not being able to resist her words for a second time. Her smile widened as we were now facing the same direction, our bodies turned towards each other. I felt even more uncomfortable, if it was possible, because now my hip bone stuck out from over the water, the bubbles clinging to the inside of my thigh to cover everything else below that point.

“You’re so beautiful,” her voice whispered as she let her eyes follow my form through the water, as if she could see straight through the barrier. And I have never been so nervous in my life, because it already felt like she could see straight through me to the things I tried to hide. Finding my usual common sense coming back to me, I shook my head in attempt to disagree with her words. I opened my mouth to voice my opinion, but I found that she had beaten me to it by pressing her lips against my own. She moved closer as she pressed her body flush against my own, intertwining our legs together and letting her hands splay out along the curve of my side to my back. My heart was beating a million miles a second, but she didn’t even take notice as she pulled back and laid her head against my neck, barely above the water.

“Calm down, baby.” Her voice floated above my pulse, proving to no extent to help it slow down. Actually, I don’t believe that I could control my own pulse right now; not only was I beside her naked, but she could feel my flawed skin against hers. My body was the peasant in the relationship, and it just wasn’t natural to see the rags compared to the riches. But I couldn’t do anything about it now as she held our bodies together to make sure I wouldn’t leave her. “I wish you’d see what I see when I look at you,” she continued as my body stayed stiff in her arms.

“What…what do you see?” I asked, my voice still a bit hard to find within my growing nerves. Sensing her eyes on me, I refused to look at her in fear to have my nerves be the death of me. “I see a beautiful girl. One that’s absolutely gorgeous, but she can’t see it. One that makes me feel incredibly lucky just by holding her.” I choked on air; she had to be lying.

“Prove it.” I felt her lips on the side of my neck as she kissed it lightly. My breath hitched in my throat. “I knew you’d say that.” She was grinning at me, removing her arms from around me and sitting up. As she leaned over me, I took notice to the small bubbles that covered her body while she was reaching for something. It took her a few attempts, but she finally got a hold of her pants and pulled something out of the pocket. “I was thinking about it for a while now, and I decided that you’d make the most beautiful bride,” her smile was back as she held out the small, silver ring.

She pulled me up and out of the water, tugging me onto the tiled floor to put the ring on me as I choked out an excited ‘yes!’. And as her eyes scanned me, her new fiancée, I didn’t care; for once, I felt perfect in my skin. I felt beautiful.
