I awoke form what feels like an eternal sleep, Legs in pain, side in pain, and head in extreme pain. Thoughts shot around my head like bullets on a battle field, and the enemy was winning. Where am I? Am I alive? Am I dead? If I am alive, what will happen? What hit me? Was it a car? Did the farmer do it? Did he do the same to Gruff? It hurt to think, but thinking was all I could do. I couldn’t move or yelp at the sharp waves of pain. My focus was hazy as I drifted back and forth between conscious and unconscious. My head felt as though it was being hit repeatedly by a herd of angry cows. Then, as though on cue, a sharp wave of pain hit my side, jolted every fiber of my being to an almost awakened state. I could hear voices now. This if nothing else answered weather I was alive or not. I was alive, but in what condition I wonder?

“Nurse, can you put this… dog, more bandages please.” The voice was an adult male’s, about maybe eight years of age (fifty six in human years). He sounded rather commanding and not at all that pleasant. The voice who I assume was called “Nurse,” however was just the opposite of the other. Her voice had a light, majestic quality, not heard to me before. “Doctor, his name is Sparky!” Her voice was indignant with irritation. Judging by the pitch of her voice, she was perhaps four (twenty eight in human years). The one “called Doctor” gave a heavy sigh that conveyed his lack of sympathy for the matter. “Nurse, I don’t really care that much. I’m not getting paid to memorize these animals’ names. It really shouldn’t matter to you either. I hate these… things.” I gave an ever so very, very weak growl that said to him (in so many words,) “I don’t like you “Doctor.” The one called, “Doctor” looked down at me, looked at “Nurse” and said, “You’re “Spark Plug” is back to consciousness, best put him under again.” “Doctor” said in a flat tone. I could hear “Nurse slap her hands to her thighs in indignity and heard her say, “Yes Doctor, and his name is ‘SPARKY’ not ‘SPARK PLUG’”. I felt a needle enter my abdomen and I fell back to the ever so familiar, “Merkey”, “dozy”, and “confusing”, state of mind, only this time I felt the most unusual sensation. It felt as though every thing was slipping away. Not just into sleep, but all my memories and feelings too. I didn’t know what it was… But I didn’t like it.

I awoke form what felt like seconds later, but I knew was more then that. This place was new to me. Everything was new to me. I couldn’t remember anything at all. This bed was new to me, so soft and fluffy. The room was new to me, dark, but very roomy. All I could remember was “Doctor” and “Nurse,” or where they just dreams. I tried to remember what happened before. All I could see in my mind’s eye was a big red building, with animals in it. I could remember another dog. Another dog…? I thought. It looked so familiar, yet I could swear I had never seen it before… or had I? It felt like I cared for this dog, almost like a brother… Did I have a brother? Perhaps he was here! I thought. I sprang up to search for him, only to fall down again. My rear leg collapsed in pain, I gave a sharp yelp as I fell to the cushiony bed again.

I could hear foot steps coming closer. There must have been stairs, because I could hear the foot steps climbing up the stairs towards me. I tried to hobble my way to a hiding spot, but the bed was too high to attempt risking jumping off and landing on my bad paw. Plus, my side was in little better shape, nor my head. I had on choice; I had to stake it out. I had to defend my self from any attack that may come. Weather it be dogs, cats, humans, farmers… Farmers…? I thought, now puzzled. Why would I have to fight a farmer? I was caught off guard, a door swung open to reveal a tall, lanky man, slightly balding. He looked about five years old (thirty five). He walked slowly towards me. I lay helpless on the bed, growling. I felt no hostile intentions from the man, but something in me was telling me not to be fooled, and that this sort of thing happened before, trouble was I couldn’t remember where. He came closer and closer. He reached one of his long arms out to touch me. I snapped at his out stretched fingers, just missing after he pulled back. This however, didn’t stop him; he continued to come closer with his hand. I prepared my body for some sort of damage. I shut my eyes tight, waiting for some sort of pain, but to my surprise, he stroked my coat. It was a long, caring pet. I felt… safe. I felt safe for the first time in what feels like ages, not that I could remember those, “Ages.” The kindly man turned from me, darted back to the door, and shouted down what I suspected to be the stairs. “Merriam? Merriam! Come up! Sparky is awake!” I looked at him in confusion I had two questions on my mind. One; was that my name, Sparky? Two; why did he have to stop petting me? He looked at me. I dawned a pleading look so he would pet me again. He gave a small laugh. He must have sensed that I didn’t want him to stop. He came over and continues to pet me. I felt I could trust this man, this tall, goofy looking, cheese smelling human was alright.
