Chapter Four: Comfort
“You sure you’re gonna be okay on this one?” Booth and Brennan slammed the doors of the car and commenced walking toward an enormous home belonging to Ollie Hughes.
“Yeah Booth, I’ll be fine, besides, I’ve got you, remember?”
“That’s true, but I’d prefer if you didn’t have to be sad at all. I’d rather you never get upset over crying everyday and me having to comfort you.”
“If you don’t want to have to comfort me then just say it, I understand.”
“No Bones, that’s not what I meant,” he turned abruptly to face her, almost causing them to collide, “I meant that I’d rather you never feel pain. I don’t enjoy watching you cry, it’s a bad day for me when that happens.”
Brennan began to blush as a smile formed on her face.
“That’s the Bones I like to see, a smiling one, but I don’t recommend smiling right now, seeing as we’re about to go tell someone that they have a dead brother.”
“Right,” Brennan quickly wiped the smile away and assumed a remorseful look.

Brennan swiped her card through the security clearance and stepped onto the platform. She walked briskly to where the remains of Paige Hughes lay. She assumed a place beside the bones and leaned over slightly, looking at the half demolished face. “I promise, I will find who did this to you.” She straightened her back and walked back around the remains and down the steps of the platform.
“What was that?” questioned a puzzled Hodgins, who had observed Brennan’s short visit to the remains.
“You think I have any better idea?” Angela folded her arms as she raised one eyebrow at her husband.
“She’s your best friend. Aren’t you guys supposed to like…know everything about each other?”
“Just because she is my best friend doesn’t mean I know every action that she ever commits or the meaning behind it.”
“Sorry, I didn’t know.”
“Yeah, that’s why men, shouldn’t try to understand women…ever…they just end up hurt, alone and very confused.” Angela cupped Hodgins’ face in her hands, kissed him lightly on the lips, and turned toward her office.

Brennan sat on her couch going over the paper work of the case, when a worried Seeley Booth entered and sat beside her. Brennan immediately stopped working. Her heart began to pound at the speed of light, no doubt caused by the very close Booth. He turned his face to hers.
“You okay, you didn’t talk the whole way here.”Booth took a good long look at her. Her hair hung loose around her face, framing it perfectly. The gleam of the light from her office showed in that same hair and in her clear blue eyes. She turned her face back to the floor and let out a shallow sigh. In almost the same motion, she whipped her head back up, forcing the hair out of her eyes. She stared at him, taking him in.
“I think I don’t even understand myself at times. Like today, that woman Greta, she was aching at the loss of her sister. But then the brother, Ollie, not even a glimmer of remorse. He was a completely numb human being. I just don’t know what I want their reactions to be. It’s either one or the other and either way, I’m displeased. And it just seems like it will never get any easier.” A single tear fell from her eye and caressed her cheek. Booth reached up and wiped the tear away. He cupped her face in his hand. She responded to the gesture by reaching her own hand up and placing it on the outside of his, moving her thumb back and forth, feeling the smooth texture of his skin.

“Bones, I hate to tell you this but, it never gets easier.” He moved his hand down to her arm; her hand remained perched on top of his.
“Well then I hope that you’re always there to comfort me.” A smile played across her blushing face. They remained in a trance like phase, not once breaking the eye contact between them. Booth slowly took her hand in his, lacing their fingers together. Both heartbeats raced on, hoping and wishing for the impossible to occur between them. A knock sounded at the door. Booth broke the gaze, quickly removing his hand from hers. Cam was leaning in the doorway, her eyes slightly widened, attempting to analyze what she thought she had seen.
“Uh…Zach has a cause of death for the male victim…just, thought you’d want to know.”
“Thanks Cam, tell him I’ll be right there.”
“Okey dokey.” With that, Cam proceeded out the door and was immediately followed by Dr. Brennan
