Judy Garland & Mel Torme: The Trolley Song
"Oi! Wait! Wait!" The frantic pleas of the strange man running down the street were barely audible over the clanging of the San Francisco trolley bells. If not for the kind man sitting behind the driver, who loudly exclaimed "You missed someone", the poor fellow would have walked home from work. But to his great fortune, the trolley slowed to a stop and allowed him to board. He grinned gratefully and thanked the kind gentleman he saw inform the driver of his presence, yet the man only stared back at him, mouth slightly open. The grateful, though now equally confused man simply shrugged and continued down the aisle, searching for a seat. The man with his mouth agape seemed to come from a trance with the stranger out of his sight. He shook his head and sighed 'Adam, you're never going to get a guy if you can't even talk to them' he scolded himself, wishing he could turn back time. It wasn't often such a marvelous mixture of perfect genes came trouncing into his life, but once again Adam had let the opportunity slip through his fingers, like sand. And this guy, this lovely stranger was so spectacular. He was tall, obviously well built though it was hidden under the midnight black suit he wore (and wore well for that matter). His skin was bronze and his hair a deeper color than his suit. His skin looked as though it would melt if you touched it, not a single blemish or misplaced hair. His eyes were a chasm of captivating colors. A brilliant green rimmed in black and spiraled with gold. As Adam pictured the God he was sharing this trolley ride with, his head began to spin. He bit his lip and let his mind take him on a journey. He began to wonder, a train of thought running alongside the images he was conjuring up. Maybe the stranger would get off a stop before Adam's and he could see if-- 'Hmmm let's not go into stalker mode here' he reminded himself. Well perhaps he would ride this trolley again tomorrow, though Adam had never seen him before, he didn't take any pride in his observational skills, and beside that, could think of a million reasons why today would be his first day on this particular trolley. 'Oh I should have at least told him he was welcome. I'm sure he felt so awkward, me just sitting there drooling like a moron. Oh I can make such great first ipressions. I truly can.' Before he could think of anything else, he saw his stop come closer and closer. With a loud clanging of bells, the trolley crawled to a stop and Adam reluctantly pulled himself from his seat. Shooting a glance backwards, he saw the stranger remained seated, with nothing to indicate he planned on moving anytime soon. Adam heaved a sigh and slowly stepped off the trolley. He stood on the sidewalk and absentmindedly stared at the stranger through the window as people boarded the trolley and still as it drove off. Before the man was out of sight, he turned to look out the window, right into Adam's eyes, and for that small moment, where there was the subtle exchange of meaningless looks, Adam felt he could fly. The man then turned his head in disinterest and let Adam crash to the ground. 'Oh you silly silly boy' Adam thought, shaking his head as he turned and began the short walk back to his apartment.
"Oh, another night alone again! What fun!" Adam shouted in a sing-song voice as he danced around his kitchen in mock-merriment. He threw his coat onto the table and pranced over to the freezer. He grabbed a tub of Ben and Jerry's, along with a spoon and went upstairs. He ran into his bedroom and pounced on his bed. "I bought this big mattress for nothing obviously, not a soul has shared it with me in months." He continued to speak to himself as he crawled under the covers and flicked on the television, surfing for something mildly entertaining. After nearly thirty channels of total garbage, he ran across a black and white picture of a sad looking girl in pigtails singing about rainbows and what's beyond them. Adam smiled and relaxed, leaning back against the wall. There was nearly nothing better than to fall asleep to the lovely voice of Judy Garland. He soon let his mind drift as he shoveled spoonfuls of "Cherry Garcia" into his mouth. So many thoughts were dancing and skipping through his mind, but the one thought that was more vivid than the rest was the beautiful stranger he encountered that day. It seemed like luck, maybe even fate, but Adam had had one of his notorious slow moments and let the gorgeous stranger run away. While he knew there were better, sexier, and definitely gayer fish out there in the sea of the world, Adam was just doubtful of how many of those fish were single and how many chose San Francisco as their home. He wondered though, as he slipped into slumber, if perhaps a yummy stranger was what was waiting for him over the rainbow.
Adam dreamed marvelous dreams. The stranger was talking to him, in his deep rhythmic voice as they cuddled in Adam's bed watching The Wizard of Oz. The stranger told him how he loved him so, and sang Adam's praises for hours. Adam blushed and giggled like a little schoolgirl, loving every minute of it. Then they kissed. And WOW, what a kiss it was. It was the best feeling Adam had ever experienced, and it was merely a dream. That kiss unleashed so many emotions, and Adam could only wish and pray and beg ad hope that he could sometime soon lock lips with this stranger and prove how magical their kiss could be. That kiss lasted throughout the rest of the night.
Adam awoke, his face firmly bonded to his pillow by steadily hardening ice cream. "Oh fantastic!" He exclaimed, once he realized what had happened. It took him a good twenty minutes to clean that mess up, and then at least another thirty to get dressed. He left his house running that morning, and barely caught his trolley into work. He spent a good portion of his workday simply zoning off and daydreaming. He was constantly counting down hours until he could leave and hopefully see the stranger again. This time though, Adam had a game plan. He was going to say something to this guy today, no matter what. Adam was firmly determined this time, nothing was going to stop him. Nothing except the longest workday in the entire world. He sat at his office and filled nearly one hundred post-it-notes with doodles of zoo animals before he finally left. He boarded the trolley after work, prepared and waiting.
"You big fat stupid baby!" He shrieked at himself the moment he burst through his door. He had seemed so ready, he was so prepared, so determined. But one look at those glistening eyes and that perfect ivory smile, and Adam was butter. He melted the moment he set eyes on the stranger, and his stomach was in a knot far bigger than he could have thought possible. He couldn't speak. He could hardly breathe. Adam sighed as he thought it over. He must have looked a fool. But, at least there was tomorrow, and as he climbed into bed that night, he was almost certain about tomorrow. Turns out he was not so certain when the moment actually arose. Adam spent nearly a week trying to sum up the courage to talk to this man. He made plans, drew little cartoons, did everything he could only to back out at the last minute. With all the complex planning and reasoning he was doing, he felt like a jewel thief trying to sum up the guts to rob a bank. He felt as though he would never even talk to this man. What were the chances anyway? God only knows Adam would be shot down and humiliated. The stranger might even attempt a murder for Adam coming onto him. Some people were so strange about their sexuality. It didn't take Adam long to decide he had to simply give up all hope, and back down. There was no point in trying so hard to get a candy that might just be sour.
He truly gave up for awhile, deciding it was better to crush his hopes now before they got too far off the ground. He even stooped so low as to take a different trolley home, though that only lasted one day. He decided no guy was worth an extra hours' wait for the rest of his life just to get home. So he simply avoided the strangers' eyes every day, Adam refused to spare even a glance in his direction, yet he broke that rule many times. He found the stranger to be irresistible, and sometimes he even found the stranger looking at him. Those few times seemed to be tricks of his mind though, because the strangers gaze only fell upon Adam for a split second, then his perfect eyes were elsewhere. The time period in which Adam gave up on the stranger was terrible, because no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't keep him off his mind. Adam thought about him nearly every night, wishing he could grow a pair and at least say hello to the man. There was no hope for any sort of relationship until they at least knew each other. Hell, Adam didn't even know the mans name, though he imagined it was something sexy that fit the Godlike appearance of the stranger. The stranger... Adam was really thinking of him as the stranger. It was then he knew things were getting pathetic. He needed to talk to him, or just stop thinking of him forever. This strange man was beginning to have a negative affect on Adam's life. He seemed to stop caring about anything, simply because he didn't know this guy. Because he couldn't talk to him. It was ridiculous, but he couldn't help it. It seemed like just because this one man was emotionally strangling him, there was no more hope. In the back of his mind, Adam knew it wasn't true, but he couldn't bring himself to accept it.
It wasn't until Adam's boss mentioned concern, that Adam really saw a problem. Until then, Adam had just seen himself in a little crush-like daze and he wasn't paying attention to the world outside his fantasies. But his boss sat him down and explained that if Adam failed to kick up the amount of work he was doing, and correspondingly, the number of days he actually attended work, then he was going to be fired. That talk is what made Adam decide he needed to pull his head from the clouds and end everything he had going for this guy. 'Oh wow, I'm going to mentally break up with someone I've never formally met.' He thought to himself as he prepared that night. But he was glad he realized things were finally getting out of hand. It was time to move onto more attainable goals, and be happy. This guy really meant nothing to him. Adam was exaggerating things, as he often did, and now he was going to stop. The next day, he was not going to look at, think about, or care about the sexy stranger on the trolley.
The next day was a Thursday, and that evening, the trolley seemed especially crammed full of people. There was barely an open seat anywhere, and no chance of sitting alone. Adam was facing the window, dreading the moment when that one weird person would choose to sit next to him. He just saw it coming. When the spot beside him finally filled, Adam sighed and spared a glance, but when he saw who had chosen his seat, he nearly screamed. It was Him. It was the stranger. Sitting right beside him. In real life. It seemed as if his brain was going into lockdown. Adam imagined an alarm calling out that this was in fact, not a drill. This was really happening. If Adam shifted about an inch, their legs would be touching. He couldn't help but gape at this wild coincidence sitting right next to him. Unfortunately for Adam, the coincidence looked right back at him and held out his hand. "I'm Devon" He said, and Adam numbly took his hand, and announced his name as well. He became submerged in thought, still holding Devon's hand. 'Wow that is a perfectly sexy name. I knew it. I really did.' He thought for a moment, then looked down and realized he was still awkwardly holding hands with Devon. It was then that he then spotted the rainbow triangle adorning the mans bracelet. "Are you gay?" Adam blurted out, then clamped his hands over his face, realizing how absolutely stupid that was. Devon simply stared. "Well I was just asking because.. I mean... Well... You just... I..." Adam didn't know what to say, how to possibly cover up what he had just said. Then, it seemed like the whole weeks worth of words Adam had been holding back, burst from his mouth. He spoke quickly, gaining speed until he was barely understandable. "Well, I mean I've seen you on the trolley for so long now, and all I can think about is how spectacular you look, and just... You're on my mind almost every night and I know it's so silly because I just now even learned your name and I don't know why I'm saying all of this, but it feels like I can't stop talking, and I just want to--" Adam was abruptly cut off by Devon as he forcefully placed his hand on the back of Adams head and pulled him in for the most passionate, controversial kiss that trolley had ever seen, and as far as Adam could tell, his dream was dead on.
Needless to say, someone finally shared Adam's big mattress with him, as two adorable strangers fell asleep with the TV on, dozing to the ironic singing of Judy Garland and Mel Torme. "Clang, clang, clang went the trolley. Ding, ding, ding went the bell. Zing, zing, zing went my heartstrings. From the moment I saw him I fell."
