Eleny Rose's Chronicle
Still Alive!
YAY! I'm still alive! Second day home from school, sick. I don't really want to talk much, so..... hey, guess what! You guys get to read another story!!! xd This is actually my newest book, : The Knit-Wit. Enjoy!

“ What is this?” I asked my mom, looking at the thing as if it had the bubonic plague.

“A new way to save money, teach you the value of the dollar, and perhaps even start a new hobby…” she answered, sounding like one of those smooth-talking hippies you meet on the street. She pointed to the box. It had a girl on it, wearing a knitted hat, scarf and gloves. The title said, "Knitting--for fun!!" Barf.

“I thought you liked crafts, dear. Knitting is a creative and productive way to spend your time.”

“Well, yeah, but…. knitting? Come on, mom.” Besides, that’s just what I needed. A new hobby.

My whole life revolves around my hobbies. When I was little, I never thought that I was good at anything. That’s when I was accepted into a super-smart school where if your GPA drops so much as a tenth, your contract is revoked. I’ve been there since the sixth grade, watching people drop out, replacements coming in and dropping out, and the replacements’ replacements dropping out. There are only like, three of the original class left.

Then, just when I thought all I was good for was solving equations and quoting Shakespeare verse by verse (which all of my English teachers loved and never could see how I could do it), I was entered into a scientific talent show. My act blew up (no, not literally, but it would’ve been cool) and I ended up singing “Black Horse and a Cherry Tree” by KT Tunstall. I never knew I could sing. My parents never knew I could sing. And now the whole school knows I can sing. So, I helped establish a professional singing class in the new wing of our school, thus adding on to the artistic side of the school. Thank goodness we don’t have to take Orchestra anymore…. Oh yeah, that’s where everyone found out that I can play the violin, guitar, clarinet, piano, and trumpet like a pro.

Then, my friend got married. And guess who forgot to pick up the cake? The groom……. so she asked me to make a huge wedding cake. Great, guess what else I love doing? Baking. I made that cake, and now I have a business. I make baby shower cakes, bridal shower cakes, wedding cakes, funeral cakes, party cakes, cakes for two, cookies, pies, bars, brownies, blondies, flan, soufflés, my own bread, everything! I have my own home bakery! Here’s how my money is divided up: 25% goes to mom, 25% goes to me, and 50% goes into savings. Since then, I can’t stop finding hobbies. I love cleaning: inside and out, I have a neighborhood chore. I bake, sew, clean, weed, rake, do schoolwork, act, sing, paint, draw, EVERYTHING! I just now realized my one true hobby: collecting hobbies.

“Do you really think I need a new hobby, mom?” My mom gave me a funny look.

“No, darling.” she sat down at the table with me and said, “Your grandfather might not always be here. He’s expressed his longing to see you more often, and I thought that this would be a great way to draw closer to him.” Now I realized what this was all about.

My grandfather is a worldwide famous knitter. He’s won thousands of competitions, won lots of money and trophies for…knitting. That’s right, my grandfather. Ironic, isn’t it, that my grandma hates knitting. I remember times when I stayed the night at their house, when he would be sitting next to her, holding her hands, which were holding the needles. I always thought it looked romantic and sweet, and I guess grandma thought the same way, so she never really learned how to knit.

Grandpa always tried to knit me stuff, but there was only one thing that I kept and still have. It was a beautiful scarf, with patterns of kelly green, light purple and aqua blue. I wore it all the time, mostly because it was made out of microfabric. You know, that stuff made out of reused plastic bottles and bags? Softest stuff ever. I used to twirl the fringes on the ends around my finger and feel how soft even one little strand was. So I wore it all the time. Now, it’s somewhere in the back of my closet, worn down, barely anything left. I love it though.

I eyed my mom suspiciously. “Okay, but what do you mean by ‘value of the dollar’? What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked, waiting for her to say that I was going to have to make my own clothes. I just knew it was coming. My mom gave me a “ha-ha” look.

“ I just thought you’d learn how to save money if you made your own clothes.” I KNEW IT!!!! I flashed her a “yeah, right” look.

“If you think that I am going to wear anything besides a scarf, made out of wool, you’re crazy. And who wears anything with little holes in it?” I asked.

“There are other yarns that aren’t made of wool, dear. I just thought I’d try,” she sighed, getting up and walking into the next room.

“ So? And what about the little holes?” I called after her.
