She sat in the field with her head in her hands. The wind blew through her long brown hair as the flowers swayed. “It’s just too much,” She looked up and blinked as the light hit her face for the first time in a while. Her green eyes shined the color of emeralds. “You are never coming back are you?” She smiled to herself and choked back the tears that started to form. She put her legs up to her chest and rested her chin on her knees. Her arms wrapped around her slender legs as her long white dress fluttered. As she put her head down, she saw a bright light. Golden spheres did not want to leave her alone as they encircled her playfully. She heard heavy breathing and the grass moving behind her before a man emerged closing the gap between them.
“My lady,” he said almost breathless, “I am Sapphire from the Northern Kingdom.” His breathing was heavy from his run across the hill-covered field.
Emerald looked up and turned her body towards him wondering where he had appeared from. Everything was so open and she had not seen any kingdom of the north. She had been alone in this limbo since the beginning.
“I’m sorry to bother you, but,” he stood there still trying to catch his breath. With his hands on his knees, his piercing blue eyes looked at her exhausted, “Do you know where I am?”
A half smile curved her full lips, “Yes unfortunately,” her eyes met his slowly again. He was very intriguing and appeared to be clueless, “You are between death and life.”
He looked at her in a state that was the first step to shock, “Limbo?”
Emerald turned away from him, “If that is what you wish to call it.”
She heard him rustling around. He had to be looking for somewhere to go that could lead to a way out. “You know it’s useless,” She took a deep breath, “You and I will never get out of here.”
He scoffed and the sat beside her, “Well then, you don’t know me very well.”
His armor was made of gold and other kinds of metals. It shined brightly in the sunlight and stood out from the violet flowers that surrounded them. Sapphire looked at her and smiled widely, “What brings such a gem to this place?” He had his head to the side like a love struck puppy.
Emerald raised an eyebrow at him, “Suicide,” was the only thing she said before they fell silent. She looked out into the distance and just wanted to cry. The more she dwelled upon it, the more she just wished to give up and go to hell.
“What keeps you here?” He broke the silence with his strong voice. He hesitated before looking at her again and then finally kept his gaze on her waiting for an answer. He was so full of questions and seemed to not want to reveal anything about himself too hastily.
“I have been looking for someone for some time now” she smiled at herself, but it was forced. “Kind of silly of me, I can’t even remember what he really looks like.” Emerald wiped her eyes as her tears started to form in the corners, clinging to her long black lashes.
“That is what happens when you die.” He looked out into the distance away from her, “You forget the time you had slowly until you disappear yourself.”
She looked over at him kind of shocked at his amazingly free response. There was more to him than she had thought originally. She found him to be childish at first glance but he appeared so grown up looking out into the distance. His hair was a mess and he had a boyish face, yet she was attracted to him oddly. His aura seemed to consume her slowly the more she looked at him.
“You could always pass on without him you know.” He looked over at her with a half-childish smile. Sapphire’s image changed so easily. “You might even find yourself to be happier and at peace.”
“Happy without love?” She shook her head and smiled to herself, “I committed suicide for that man so I could see him again.” She took at deep breath in and tried to remember the way the cold breeze felt on her skin. She loved that feeling on those cold nights when the moon was crescent. Full was beautiful, but the crescent was much more special because it was under that beautiful moon that she met him in the forbidden garden.
“Will you tell me what happened?” Sapphire could tell she was thinking of her most memorable experience with him. It would be forever imprinted in her cold, dead heart until she passed over.
She looked over at him, “It was a year before I died,” the smile she showed was real for the first time as she talked to him. “I walked into the garden curious of what I was to find on the other side,” she sighed happily and closed her eyes, “it was the one place that gave me peace from all of the hardships I faced.” She could feel her own heart fluttering with her words, “I met him by the forget-me-nots and fell in love so easily.” She sighed and held herself even tighter, “Foolish really.”
Sapphire was silent then took in the scene, “Did you meet him at the ball next?” He seemed a little surprised. He could see her story clear before him.
Emerald could hear him moving around as if he was nervous about something. “Yes, that was the next place I saw him,” she got up slowly and began to spin almost dancing with herself.
The room she knew from that night came into focus as he watched her dance slowly. The music was familiar to him and there were guests everywhere, but still no prince. Sapphire took her hand hesitantly and began to dance with her as the room became more detailed and clear to him. Her clothes melted away into the gown she wore the night of her death and she came closer to the strange man. With her eyes still closed, she started to hum the song that Sapphire was hearing. It was slow and made his heart ache. He could feel something tugging at his memory but nothing revealed itself. He found her astonishing, having the look of an angel. She looked so innocent while she was dancing with him. He did not even think she realized how happy she looked.
Emerald’s eyes opened. Her dream evaporated before his eyes and the field returned. The last note came through her lips and a tear trickled down her cheek to the ground. She smiled with another tear streaming down her face, "Sorry." she pulled away and turned around so he couldn‘t see her cry, "Wow I must seem so weak." She wiped the tears and turned around with the same fake smile from before.
“My lady, uhh, I’m sorry,” He still could not believe what he saw, as he pictured the princess in the gown, “I’m sorry I made you remember.”
"What is been done is done," she sat down, "it could not have been anything as dumb as I." She fiddled with the bottom of her dress.
He looked sad for the first time to her. “I was killed by my brother,” he sat beside her, “I was searching for someone as well.”
She smiled, "at least you don't just live in a dream..." she looked over at him and touched his face, "be glad you are able to still smile the way you do." She took her hand away quickly feeling embarrassed, “He protected me and helped me escape the garden after confessing his love for me.” She hid her face feeling that if she were comforted she would cry again. “I didn’t even get to tell him, he risked his life for me and I killed myself after being told he was stabbed.” She seemed to yell in frustration, “I’m just so helpless I gave up!”
“Then let’s get out of here, be reincarnated to start new.” He desperately wanted to make her happy. It was a strange feeling to have so early in knowing her.
She scoffed, "I cannot leave, you can feel me and I you but I am unreal..." she closed her eyes and touched her heart, “I am stuck and hopeless, I threw away my life and don’t deserve another.”
He looked at the fact of the mistake the princess had made, “No,” he looked her in the eyes reaching the core of her soul, “Our physical bodies are dead, but our souls are thriving, this is the choice I make.” Sapphire continued to stare into her enchanting green eyes, “Now unless you have not given up all hope in yourself, then you should figure a way to get out of here and into his arms again.”
She looked at him, "You have that much faith..." She looked down and picked up the poison blade that was lodged in her chest when she had first arrived. She studied it and then threw it down.
“Yes, even death sets things back to normal, unless it has lowered your sense of believing.” He pushed it farther into the ground so she could only see the top.
"I don't wish to go back," she looked at the sword and touched her once beating heart, "I'd rather stay in my dream and wait. He will come." She turned to him, "He just hasn't been broken from the cycle of reincarnation.”
He looked with a sad face, “And we have not either,”
She smiled at him, "I just wish we could be together again," she collapsed to the ground and cried, "I was ready to devote my whole heart to him."
He sat next to her, holding her to calm her, “My story of love is similar to yours, don’t drown in your sorrow, you can still enjoy this life.”
She gritted her teeth the shouted, "I AM DEAD!" She covered her face, "I don't wish to go back to death the way I did before, I don't want to run to it after I am reincarnated," She looked up at him with tears streaming wildly down her face, "I CAN'T FACE HIM!"
He had figured out the source of her pain and lifted her face towards his own, “I promise it is going to be ok.” He kissed her forehead and put his chin on top of her head as he stroked her long locks of hair.
"But...I'm so confused." Emerald buried her face into his chest. She did not care if he felt uncomfortable; she just felt she had to hide. She looked at him, "You don't understand, he saved my life by giving himself up. He gave me my life so I could live and I turned around and committed suicide blinded by my sorrow." Emerald closed her eyes, "That is why I feel I can't look him in the face. That is why I would rather stay here." She looked deep into his eyes. His face showed little emotion but his eyes told the story. She stared into his dark ocean pools and saw a small light glimmer with in them.
His voice was hushed and hardly a whisper, "I will go with you." He took a slow, relaxing breath, “I know it’s hard to look into the eyes of a loved one and think that he or she would either want to kill you or love you.” His expression became softer, yet sad. “My brother tried to look for me and sentence me to death, and your lover would risk anything for you.” Sapphire looked at her receiving eyes.
"Who knows, maybe he was reincarnated in you," this made her smile, "there is always hope." Her cheeks turned a light shade of pink.
He looked at her puzzled, and then laughed to himself letting her go out of embarrassment. “I…well I don’t think…”
She looked at him, “I doubt it though, I would have know long ago.”
He looked down, his face blushed, “I believe we were going to find a way out,” he stood up quickly and saw nothing around them, “I will go this way and see.” He started to walk quickly almost trying to escape her gaze.
She watched him go until a blinding broke her stare. “Look!” She jumped up and away from the golden spheres that had disappeared for sometime. The sky became black and the open fields died with the darkness that crept out of the ground slowly beneath their feet. A bright light shot up from the ground where the spheres immediately darted to it being enveloped in the light that grew before them. The gate to the mortal world was opening slowing before them.
Sapphire smiled and looked at her as the wind became heavy around them, "We may not find each other easily after this. We will be reborn in different people." He grabbed her hand, "but please promise me you will never forget me" He kissed her as a farewell and walked through being enveloped in light.
Emerald looked into the light seeing only his loving hand remaining, “Wait!” she grabbed it and held on to him, as a portal figure appeared that lead the way to the other side, “AHHH!”
They fell out on the other side one after another still holding each other’s hand.
"What?" she looked at him stunned and heart pounding. Emerald felt too close for comfort, but the shock seemed to overturn her feeling. Sapphire looked into her same familiar emerald eyes and smiled knowing that they had stayed together.
“Never, I would never forget you,” she kissed his cheek out of happiness, almost slipping another pair of words in the process.
She looked at him and touched his face examining his eyes. They were soft as her lovers, but he told of a different story. She smiled at him as the door opened abruptly.
“Here she is!” men charged in and grabbed hold of Emerald, “This one escaped from us.” They drug her to her feet grabbing her by her hair to keep her from struggling.
A servant came in silently behind them and opened the curtains to reveal a library of some kind. The books lined the wall by the hundreds and many were dust covered. The bookcases were trimmed with golden designs and many of the cloth books were worn to the spine. One caught his fancy quickly, “The Book of Spells”.
“Magic?” He said whispering to himself, he could barely believe it but before he knew it, he was whispering with force, “FIRE!” he lit the corner of one of the men’s robes and it burst into flames in a matter of seconds. “Emerald!” His worried expression said it all as he grabbed her hand and kicked the man guarding the door out of the way. He ran quickly, yet strangely knowing exactly where to go. He ran through the dirt-filled passageways of old stone down some eroded stairs. They came before a plain wooden door that looked as if it were to fall off its hinges at any given moment. “In here.” He pushed the door open and shoved her in first.
“What is going on?” she clutched his shirt as he put his arm around her.
“I don’t know…” he pulled her closer to him and walked into the damp room closing the door slowly behind him.
The room reeked of death and mold. “Fire,” He whispered to himself and a small flame came into his hand lighting up the enclosed room. It was flooded with slugs and carcasses of dead beings. Rats and bugs scurried quickly to escape their, now illuminated, darkened sanctuary.
“There,” she pointed to a small light from behind a crate, “I can see something.” When she pulled her hand back, she yelped loudly. Emerald held her hand close to her chest protecting the burn she had gotten from the flame that was now smoldered.
“Quiet.” He put his hand over her mouth to stop her from making any more noises. He grabbed her other hand and took her over to the crate that had the light peeking through. “It’s too heavy to lift.” he started to push on it with all he had.
“Captain!” The guards looked at their leader, “This is the only place they could have gone.” They pointed down to the cellar door.
“Good,” He smiled, “they have no other place to hide.” He crept like a snake down to the door and heard a yelp.
“My lord Alexandrite,” the man came close to his ear, “are you sure they are th…?” He was stopped mid-sentence for his master grabbed him by the throat.
“Where else could they be?” He broke the man’s neck and turned back to the door hearing light footsteps and whispers, the man laid lifeless on the cold stone floor. “I will kill you brother,” He smiled menacingly, “I shall not hesitate to kill you for her.” He opened the door and saw a small glimmer of light in the corner. Rushing into the room was of no use, for all he saw was a glimpse of a small shoe slipping through the large crack in the stonewall. “Find them!” he shouted to the men that had followed him in, “I want his head in my hands!” He almost seemed to growl as his eyes glowed an unnatural red. The men ran out without a word and full of fear.
“This way!” He grabbed her hand as she came out from the other side, “There seems to be an arch of some sort over the pasture.” They started to run quickly in the open before they reached the gate. The lock was rusted and the chains hung limp around the bars. “Get up on my shoulders, “He leaned down for her so she could step onto him, his voice frantic, “Hurry I hear them coming!” She did as he said and climbed until she was able to jump over to the other side of the locked gate. Sapphire unsheathed a dagger from his boot and started to bash at the lock so he could join her but nothing budged. “Go on without me,” He grabbed her hand and kissed it, becoming embarrassed and rushed, “I love you.” He kissed her cheek and then turned to meet his fate as the guards came running up.
“No!” She reached through the gate the grab him but she could not get to him. She started to cry and was frantic at how he was acting. “It can’t happen again!” she turned around, her face full of tears. The flowers were withered and leaves laid dead on the ground. Vines filled the garden floor and it seemed over grown for many years. She spotted an old grave marker with a sword, “Forgive me.” She said taking it from the ground. She rushed back to the gate dragging the heavy blade. With her unsteady stance, she swung it hoping with all her might that she could smash the chains that held the lock in place. The lock fell to the ground with great force as the broken chains followed. Emerald could see him shaking with fear and grabbed his hand leading him into the garden, “This way.” She led him through the debris and the dead trees to a large fountain that seemed to have dried up long ago. She kept the sword in hand as the soldiers surrounded them.
“You cause quite the ruckus.” Alexandrite came through the crowd with his hand on the hilt of his sword. He walked up to Emerald who was paralyzed with fear and smiled. He caressed her face with a gentle hand, “You shouldn’t run away.”
Emerald spit in his face as Sapphire pulled her closer to him. “Leave her alone.” He was unarmored and his dagger was very short.
His brother circled them and stared into Sapphire’s eyes, “You barely even know this girl. You met her in a garden and kissed her once.” He laughed, “Miss your brother’s engagement ball to her and sneak away to find the traitorous daughter.” He turned his gaze to her, “I was informed you committed suicide yet you manage to escape the guards and run away to warn him that I was going to kill him.” His dark blue eyes started to turn red as he whipped out his sword to stab Sapphire, “I will have you!”
Without even thinking, Emerald pushed Sapphire out of the way and closed her eyes stabbing forward. She took in a deep breath feeling no pain. Scared to look upon his face again, her eyes opened with hesitation. Alexandrite was slumping over, falling to the ground, her blade still in his black heart. She ripped the sword from his dying body, “I hope you go straight to hell.”
Sapphire rushed over to her and grabbed her face smiling. She put her hand to his fluttering heart and sighed with relief. “You’re so stupid.” He embraced her and held her tight. “How could you do that?”
Emerald just looked into his worried face, shocked at her discovery. The guards just looked in amazement and confusion before bowing before Sapphire. They had been put under a spell, remembering nothing of what events had taken place. Sapphire dismissed them all and they returned to the castle without another word.
“I’m sorry,” She sat on the fountain after all the commotion and looked up at him with her bloodstained face, “I didn’t realize it before.”
Sapphire smiled and grabbed her face wiping some of it from her brow, “I love you,” He closed his eyes and put his forehead to hers. “I finally know who I am.” He kissed her suddenly pressing his lips gently to hers.
Emerald’s eyes were wide then closed slowly as she finally realized he was her
lover all along. Time seemed to rewind for them as they sat together in that now distant memory of the field. When she accepted her decision in death, it gave her new life.
