The Dark Land

Life was hard in the village, secluded, desperate, lonely. They had to fend for themselves. There was no light, only that which came from the candles and torches. The only water came from a well, but, nobody knows where it led. Any crops they planted died, there was no food but from the tree older than the village itself. The tree that wailed in the wind, and cried from its leaves. It stormed, but never rained.

It was dark, dull, and nearly lifeless. The children had to make up stories, especially about the gate. the gate that was unable to be opened. Stories of the first people to write down their adventures were told. They tried to open the gate, but none succeeded. The gate was now a focus for the children to make stories about, nothing more, until the village priest came sprinting through the doors of the council house. "My children! I know of a way to open the gate!" He proclaimed loudly, "This book tells me of a way to the land of the light, follow me and you will be rewarded with seas of gold!" The council all agreed to follow the priest and leave the secluded life of the village.

Soon, the villagers all gathered around the dark gray stone gate, standing by itself, but nothing happened. The children paced from one foot to the other impatiently, but finally the gate started to open. The noise was loud like grinding stone and light flooded in blinding everyone for a moment. The village was excited as they marched forward into gate.

700 years later

Jeeps zoomed through the sand, making tracks wherever they went. radios buzzed with noise as the archaeologists talked about their new interesting discovery, a lonely door which seemed to be locked but led to nothing. The team of twelve archaeologists were called in to try to open the door. The jeep driver stopped at the camp followed by a few more jeeps and a man walked up. "The gate is a few hours down, but here we found something just as interesting," He yelled over the sand and wind, "Around three hundred skeletons. Women, children, and men, one seems to be a leader and we think hes a priest by what hes buried with." "But this isn't close to any known civilization," One of the team members replied. "Exactly" The man said before the jeeps drove off into the desert to the gate.

The team members were never found again, but the archaeologists said the door looks like it has been opened.
