Chapter 1

Noone knew who he was. They didn't know where he was from, but most of all, they didn't care. Nobody gave him a second look. He was just another homeless child sitting in the alley, staring at the people walking past him. But he didn't care either, Mortifer never cared. He could never find it in his heart to care, for anyone. He knew this was going to be his life, to be homeless, to never be loved again, to never feel a warm bed. But he didn't care, this was all he really cared to do in his spare time. He liked to watch all the people walk by in their Sunday best, pretending to be someone important. He knew they were all fakes. He could see the phony smiles that never touched the eyes, but he still didn't care. People greeted each other in the streets, but made sure to stay away from the kid in the alleyway, watching them.

'They don't care about me, why should I care for what they do? I'm not the one who has to worry about keeping a good life. But, I do envy them. They get to live the lives that they live, by choice. This,' and Mortifer takes his eyes off the passing traffic for a few seconds to look around, ' This was forced on me. I still wonder whether death would have been better. Maybe I should just stop watching all these people. They make me sick the way they never fend for themselves. They almost always leave it to those damned cops or to someone else.'

He had made this vow a lot, but he new he would be back the next day, watching everybody walk by, and he knew why. In fact, it was practically an obbsesion of his. He could see other things that noone else can. He didn't know whether it was just his imagination, or if it was real. He never liked to talk about it. The one time he told somebody, it was another homeless guy in the streets who wanted to know something. The guy had asked Mortifer why he just sat there and watched people go by everyday. Mortifer had told him, and the homeless guy ran of screaming about a madness fever. The guy never came back, and no other homeless guy ever came near him since. The guy must have spread rumors about him. But, once again, he didn't care.

Mortifer could never remember what happened the day he had to take to the streets, he could only remember running out of a door at a full sprint, never to return to what he thinks might have been his former home. Mortifer only knows that whatever it is that he remembers, was a life or death situation. If he hadn't ran, he might not be here right now watching the passing traffic.

Mortifer looked back into the traffic, just in time to see someone in the mouth of the alley, looking at him. The girl was deffinitly the first to stop and look back. Mortifer couldn't remember anyone ever stopping to take a look at him. In fact, Mortifer found it quite amusing, but he just stared back blankly. Then the girl smiled. She actually smiled. Mortifer couldn't help but let his jaw drop. Noone in the history of Mortifer's life, had anyone ever smiled at him. All he had ever gotten were stare's of pity and disgust.

The staring contest went on and on. Mortifer didn't want to be the first to say anything, but he knew he had to. But he first took the time to take a look at this mysterious stranger. It was indeed a girl, her features alone told him that. She was maybe a little shorter than him by a couple of inches, and had a very slim body. She was more than likely a little younger than him, but he had been living on the streets for so long, he couldn't tell anymore. But there was something about her, something he couldn't place. It stirred something inside of him, but he couldn't place it. He decided to drop it, but it stuck to him like a bad smell. Since he didn't know what it was, he decided to just forget it and continue to watch the girl.

But the girl just continued to stare at him. Finally getting tired of this, Mortifer finally decides to do something...... but he dosen't know what to do that wouldn't scare the girl too much, just enough to give her the message that he dosen't want any company at this time. He opens his mouth and mutters a small " hi". His voice was deep, husky, and broken. The last time he had spoken to anyone had to be the homeless guy, and that had to have been at least a month ago. But the girl looked like all she wanted to do was just stare at homeless people, because she started at the first sound of my voice.

" Oh...uh...hello"

Whoever she was, she sounded very timid and shy. Go figure. He had never figured he would ever be in this situation. He hadn't even thought he would be talking to anyone ever again, much less a shy girl. He had figured his next encounter with humanity would be with the police or someone offering what the homeless called " pity money ".

" What do you want?"

The girl blushed and looked away.

" I... I... I saw your....eyes and... thought they were sorta... cool and...stuff."

" What about my eyes?"

The girl looked at him once again. She was indeed looking at his eyes. He knew what she meant about his eyes, but he never thought someone would find them "cool". His eyes are probably the main reason people avoided him. He took pride in them, because he liked to be left alone. Something stirred in his stomach again. Mortifer starts thinking maybe he's getting sick.

" If you have something to say, say it. I have better things to do." He lied. The only thing left that could do, he was doing before he was interupted. He could probably hunt for food again, but he had already eaten just a few hours ago.

" Your eyes.. they're not like everyone else's. I have never met anybody with red eyes before...."

Mortifer smiled at her, he had never seen anybody talk to one of his friends saying, " That kid is weird, look at his eyes.... they're red. Ever seen anyone with red eyes before?". Nor had he ever heard anybody mention to him that he had red eyes. Of course, nobody ever dared stop and talk to him, until this damn girl disturbed him. ' I guess anything is possible from here...'

The girl looked surprised at him. He looked at her back. He smiled again.

" Not everyday a homeless man smiles at you, is it."

She just continued to stare at him. Now she was starting to bug him. She opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out, and she closed it again. She opened and closed her moouth several times till something finally came out.

" Um, you said anything was possible, right? How did you say that without moving your mouth?"

Mortifer's eyes widened. How had she known what he had been thinking? He hadn't said a thing. How could she just know what he had been thinking in his head?

A honk came from down the street where a car full of boys and girls were waving to her and beconing her to join them. She yelled at them to wait a minute and turned to him. " how did you do that?".

" I don't know what you're talking about, I never said anything to you"

" I know, but I heard it, it was your voice and you said ' I guess anything is possible from here'. And you did it without moving your mouth....Who are you?"

Mortifer looked into her eyes. He saw his sadness reflected in them, the sadness he had always kept to himself, never to let anyone else in ever again.

" I just want to let you know, you don't want to live my life, my life isn't worth it. But, truth be told, I don't know myself."

" You mean like amnesia?"

" More than likely, I can't remember anything for the past few years, and the only thing I have been able to remember is my name."

The girl looked at him and smiled. But it was a kind, heart-warming smile. He hated warm and kind.

" Can I at least know that?"

He looked at her skeptically, he had barely gotten to know her. ' How can I trust her?'

The girl smiled again, " You don't have to trust me, I just thought it'd be nice to know", And she giggled. He looked at her again and started to laugh, a nice husky laugh. People looked at him and were probably thinking he had just gone crazy, that just made him laugh harder. They could all go to hell for all he cared, but this girl had a place in paradise waiting for her.

" The name's Mortifer, Yeah... I know it sounds weird, but it's my name."

The girl smiled, ' dosen't she ever get tired of smiling...' Mortifer thought, then stopped. He didn't even have to look at her to know she was smiling wider now, probably laughing to herself. He began to blush. " My name is Josephine, Josie for short.".

Mortifer looked at her and met her eyes for just a second.

' He may be homeless but he sounds like a pretty good guy.'

Mortifer's jaw dropped as soon as she turned to join her friends inside the car. As he watched her start running to get to her friends faster, he saw little demons running with her, following her. Step-for-step. Breath-for-Breath. Until she got to the car. Then they climbed on the car and began examining it, including the wheels, and one managed to slip in under the hood without disturbing it. The kids were talking in the car, unaware of what was happening around them, then, he saw Josie in the back. He knew he had to do something.

" Damned demons never stop. It's always kill, kill, kill. Don't they ever give it up?". The cars engine started and revved, then the car sped away.

Mortifer grabbed a cloak he had found in the garbage a few weeks ago. It was actually still in pretty good shape. He slipped it on and began running, top speed, to catch up to the car as fast as possible.
