prelude to Disjointed
She didn't know where she was going, and frankly at that point in time she didn't care. Her body was on autopilot- weaving through the crowded streets of what she called home. It was hot out, even at five in the afternoon and even the light airy dress she wore couldn't keep the sweat from lightly dripping down her back. She paused, tying her hair up into a loose bun- her halfhearted attempt to fend off the heat. She walked..and walked until bare feet met sand. She blinked, the feeling of sand and the crashing sound of the waves sending her back into her body a moment. She winced curling in on herself a moment before righting herself and taking slow steps towards the clear water.
At ankle deep it was warm, and it reminded her of bathwater- the occasional bits of seafoam that marred the clear surface it's bubbles. She sank to her knees fingers digging into the goopy sand. She relaxed curling onto her side, half of her face submerged in the water. She closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.
A tiny jellyfish had slipped through the netting and drifted closer to her. It was blue and it's tentacles were microscopic- a baby.
I don't have a face, but I can tell when I'm getting close to something- I can almost feel it's heartbeat. My tentacles brush against it- never mind that, a her. Who's sleeping in the water, am I close to shore? I run my tentacles across her again and she jerks away, a highpitched cry coming from her. Did I hurt her? Of course I did. I pushed myself away, but stayed close enough to sense she was still there. She cries out again and I move to go closer, stopping myself last minute. I'll just stay here awhile until she leaves, maybe she's lonely like I am.
Tiny sharp jolts of pain erupted along her thigh and she cried out, her body jerking harshly in an attempt to throw off the pain. A few minutes pass and for a moment it intensifies and she cries out again her body twisting until shes laying on her back. She doesn't open her eyes, just licks the salt from her lips. Was it from the water or from her tears? She didn't know, her mind swirled and she slowly drifted back off into sleep, oblivious of the small creature floating beside her almost protectively.
I try not to feel bad as I sense the water splashing harshly around me, her cries pulling me closer- but forcing me farther away. Can't anyone hear her? Isn't there someone looking for her? Again. with no face I can't frown so I just wiggle my tentacles dissaprovingly. Where am I? What am I doing?
It was dark when she finally woke up. She whimpered and rubbed along her thigh, a moment of panic striking through her as she saw several stings along her thigh. She looked around, heart racing until her eyes locked onto a tiny blob floating close to her in the water. Her breath caught, and she moved to inch away. It drifted closer for a moment, then stopped. She cocked her head at it her body taunt, ready to move quickly if nessacary. A flash of understanding crossed her features and she nodded- more to herself. It was late but she didn't want to go home just yet. The water felt good despite the stinging in her thigh, and the moon was brighter than she'd ever seen back home. Her eyes flicked over to the jellyfish again and she absentmindedly rubbed her jellyfish tattoo through the fabric of her dress. She smiled lightly and mouthed a silent thank you. It had understood she needed company too.
A male voice, sharp and urgent jolsted her from her thoughts. She winced and suddenly everything came rushing back to her. She bit her lip guiltily and anwsered shakily when her name was called. Her voice was raspy, and it cracked when she tried to speak louder. Her hair was a tangled mess around her shoulders and she reached up, trying to yank the hair tie out of her hair. Feet splashed in water, and out of the corner of her eye she saw the tiny blob drift away. Despite whatever was about to happen she felt a warm ball of happiness in her chest, and she decided to name it Kissmet. -fin
