Black. Pure darkness. Painted over everything.
Words. Scattered here and there across the blackness.
Kind words. Difficult words. Amorous words. All sparkling in the dark like jewels.
The words were few now. But time was shorter.
Grabbing the words in desperation, it turned to the sky.
This is wrong. It whispered through the darkness. This is not how it was supposed to be...
Once, long ago, it had remembered everything about this lost soul. This was its task. Its purpose.
It shivered with something approaching joy as it collected the memories from the soul. This was no accident: Emotions were as much a part of the it as the life and death
Memories collected like dew.
And once they had formed a line that spanned the entire world.
Words collapsed into sunlight before passing through the darkness and into the pool of memory. From the pool, the words joined together to form colonies, the colonies united into whirlpools of light, and the light coalesced into stars.
Each star was like a child, and it loved them all.
Look at this forgotten memory...

The young child stumbled as he tried to keep up to the quick steps of the priest in front of him as they walked across the courtyard of the castle. A boy at the age of only six, seemed excited as he followed behind the aged man whom was dressed in holy robes, adorned with a cylinder-shaped hat adorned with jewels and a halo, while a staff that had the design of an strange pokemon at the tip with folded wings below it. " Come now, Lord Astal. Time is of the essence. " The old man's voice, worn from years of use, spoke which caused the boy behind him to keep up with every step. Lucis, the priest, had told the young prince that tonight had been an important moment for him and that such a honor was never bestowed upon a royal in the lineage except for the first recorded King. Astal, having been wearing nothing but a white cloak that covered all his features and dragged across the floor, seemed both anxious and excited. The child had been under much scrutiny after his birth from the Kingdom on whether it would make a proper heir to the throne. The argument had come from the church and other pure-blooded nobles who believed that only a true Sky-native child could inherit the crown, and that was not what Astal had been at all. The boy was the child of the Sky King, whom many had feared and admired, but his mother had been of not Sky lineage, but of an entirely different kingdom at all. That alone had made it difficult for many to accept the child and so, Lucis had proposed a ceremony to see whether the Gods would accept Astal as their own or not. This ceremony itself had never been practiced since its last use, but it alone would undoubtedly make the decision for the kingdom. Astal, wishing to be accepted and hoping to obtain his father's acceptance, seemed more than willing to follow along.

As they approached the large Cathedral that had been also part of the castle, serving as a place of discussion and trials, Astal's eyes lit up amongst the dark of the night. Never had the boy been allowed in the holy building, having been only capable of seeing it through his window from afar, and instantly his childish curiosity lit up like a candle. As they approached the towering, and almost overbearing, gates, Lucis pushed them open with relative ease and the two walked in. To Astal, it had been an amazing sight that he promised himself he would never forget. Miracles of artistry were everywhere. Beautifully carved works with lights of red, amber, and green dangled over their heads. As they moved away from the massive sculptures, they found a great array of smaller ones of legendary pokemon. Some were covered in glass or emerald, but many were composed of materials Astal had never before encountered. The sheer variety of colors and styles was staggering. The rows of seats that they passed had made the child conclude that the Cathedral could have held hundreds! Once more, Astal had seen the same strange pokemon that had been on Lucis's staff lined on the rooftops of the Cathedral. They almost looked like letters, but the child could not figure them out. Unable to find a theme or purpose to the abstract works around him, Astal eventually fell silent after his awes were done. Once they crossed the threshold of the building, the only thing that awaited them at the end had been a mere altar with a concrete block that had been illuminated by the moonlight above that broke through the glass. Surrounding it had been massive pillars that ranged of different heights. Five pillars in total, Astal took note that the shortest one had a seat at the tip of it. And when he looked towards the others, he noticed that they, too, had seats until he peered up above and to the tallest where not only a seat had been, but his father as well within it.

Once the boy felt his father's gaze upon him, his back straightened and a chill ran throughout his body. Even in the darkness of the shadows that covered his features, his father had such a stern look upon him that Astal often wondered if he ever did smile when he looked at him. His features were always cold, much like a winter's wind, and his overbearing presence often made the air around you feel like it got heavy. " With your blessing, my King. I wish to use the Ancient Ceremony of the Marking. " Lucis had spoken up towards his King whom had been the only being present to witness this. Looking up only barely, Astal saw that his father had only given a short nod and said no single word. Lucis, now turning to face Astal, had pointed his staff towards the altar like he was displaying it for him. " Now, your highness, if you would take off the cloak and lay down. " He asked, kindly. Astal, taking a quick glance from his father to Lucis and back to his father once more, had nodded as he reached up along the collar where the small button had been that held the robe along his body. Once it was pressed, the cloak slipped off his shoulders and onto the floor to reveal the skin of the child's upper body. Without a shirt, Astal's skin shined with the moonlight as it had seen little of daylight and his slim build was a sign of his nobility - at no point in Astal's life had the child faced any need for requiring muscles. Passing the priest and having to struggle a bit to get up onto the altar due to his height, Astal finally sat up on it and looked at Lucis curiously. " Lay down, my Lord. " He did so, only to shiver at how cold the cement block had been against his bare back. " Will...this really prove that I can be King someday? " It had been the first time that Astal spoke since he left his room, even more amazingly that he did so with his father present. Lucis, smiling gently as he approached the Altar, reached out to the child's shoulder with his aged hand and touched it. " The Gods know all, My Lord. And with this, you will display your eternal connection to them and for the rest of the Kingdoms to know of your right to rule. If this Ceremony proceeds as planned, then it will prove that you are the chosen King to rule all lands. " All Lands? Could one person truly do that, the boy wondered. But if the Gods had decided it, then who was he to question them and their divine plans? If he was truly to be the chosen King, then he wanted to be a kind one. " Okay, I'm ready. " Astal said confidently.

What Astal did not expect was to feel one of his wrists handcuffed. Turning his head, he saw Lucis glancing at him with a reassuring smile as it was obvious that it startled the boy. " Do not fear, my Lord. This is for the sake of the ceremony. " Why would handcuffs be necessary for him to prove that he was to be a King? Astal did not like it, but he did not want to show weakness in front of his father and reluctantly, the boy nodded. After his hands were bound, his ankles were as well until Astal could tell that he had no real mobility anymore. Looking up at the large moon that shined in the night sky above past the windows, Astal saw the towering pillars around him and knew that at the top one had been his father that looked down at him. The boy feared his father's disappointment, knowing that he likely wished for a stronger heir, and with that, Astal had a strong desire to prove himself worthy in any possible way. He'd allow himself to be bound like this and take on any ceremony or pokemon that stood in his way - he would not be deterred. A sudden jingle of a bell echoed throughout the Cathedral, disturbing Astal's thoughts as he blinked a few times. " A Clear Bell(*) we use for your spirit to hear our pleas. " Lucis had spoken out in a booming voice that Astal never thought the old man had within him. Gulping, Astal merely remained quiet as he tried to focus on his words. " And present your Rainbow Feathers(*) for your life to be known by all. " Something strange had been happening as Lucis spoke these words. The air became different, almost heavy, as if a invisible fog filled the Cathedral and caused it to become hard to breathe. Lucis raised his staff out, the strange creature now hanging above Astal, and to the boy's amazement, it became alive. The tip had glowed and a black symbol-shaped being floated out. Not before long, the walls that were once filled with these strange symbols became alive as well and floated around the altar in a circle before chanting their name: Unown. Afraid, Astal tugged at his shackles to no avail as he felt scared to be surrounded by so many strange creatures. But as he watched around him, an item began to take form above him out of thin air in the shape of several feathers. " We only exist to serve your divine plan; so unto us, please descend. " The strange pokemon had spun sporadically, as if Lucis's words seemed to cause them to react, but the only act it had done was to cause the feathers to glow brightly like a sun had erupted within the Cathedral. Blinding to the eyes, Astal had trouble looking at the feather's directly for a few moments, but eventually he could make out that the feathers themselves were being broken down into what appeared to have been golden strings that flowed through the air. " Find in us your nest. And in us, find rest. " The Unown had moved in an entrancing way, often causing Astal to feel dizzy, but his attention for the creatures disappeared the moment one of the golden strings had flown down to make contact with his chest.

Immense pain. Never before in his life had the boy felt such pain before. It had been like someone had taken fire and pressed it directly against his skin. Without restraint, Astal gasped and screamed as his body attempted to clench around him only to be stopped by the shackles. The pain had been immeasurable by definition alone. If that had not been enough, the other threads from the other feathers touched other parts of his chest which only increased the pain ten-fold. The six year old screamed louder, filling the air with the chanting of the unown, but nothing stopped. It was as if there was no sound that escaped his mouth, but in fact the people in the room simply did not listen to the child's wails. Gritting his teeth, Astal turned his head towards Lucis and reached up his hand in hopes that the priest would help. " It hurts...it hurts! Please!...Make it stop! It hurts! Father, please!!! I'm begging you!! Ah-Ahhh-!!! " His back arched as he felt the threads of light being etched into his skin - into his soul. Flashes of memories, pain, voices, and things he did not understand started to meld within Astal's own memories. Everything became vague and blurred. He felt like he was dying and being born in every part of his body. Every strand of muscle felt like it was ablaze with fire and there was an intense heat developing within him that made him feel like he was about to burst. Emotions had rushed through him all at once. Some Emotions he knew, others he did not, and there was no sign of it stopping. These emotions washed over him like a wildfire and spread to every fiber of his being. He felt afraid, restrained, furious, tormented, violated, humiliated, and other sensations that he did not know existed. His screams did not stop as he shook violently upon the altar while the last few strands had been imprinted upon his body. It wasn't until the last bit of light that floated through the air had connected with Astal's body that the child suddenly arched completely only to gasp in a dry voice. He maintained the uncomfortable position before his body fell limp against the altar. He laid there unmoving and unresponsive, displaying the only life within him as a short shallow breath. The Unown that hovered had stopped their motions and slowly returned to their individual place upon the walls and Lucis' staff, ending the ceremony. In return, Lucis saw the imprint of the Gods rested upon Astal's chest that took the shape of the Pheonix itself embedded within. " You bless us with your vessel. " The Priest said gently as he saw the ceremony having been a success. " Did you succeed? " The gruff voice of the King had caused Astal's chest to inhale almost in instinct, but that act was ignored by the two men. Lucis had stepped from the altar and bowed before the pillar that held the King's throne, smiling proudly of himself. "Lord Lucille has indeed inherited the Sky's Blessings. Though this time of imprint is crucial and will require him to be in solitude for a week. " Lucis had no plan to allow Queen Lynn to come close to Astal when the child was finally showing some promise since his birth. It was already enough for the priest to stomach her presence in the castle, he could not afford to have her infect Astal now with beliefs of 'Peace' now. " So be it. But do hurry, my wife wishes to take the boy to the Sea Kingdom. Something about meeting her friend and child. " The King said in a bitter tone. Lucis having nodded once more as he turned to the child whose eyes had stared blankly towards the sky and moon above, cursing its existence.

The week that followed was nothing short of darkness. Astal was locked away in a room, underneath the Cathedral with little food and water given to him. Any source of light had come from a candle which lasted only for a few hours before being snuffed out. But none of these things had bothered the boy, no, because he had larger fears. Every night had come to the beginning of nightmares and every morning began with a tantrum of screaming once he awoke. Lucis knew that Astal was suffering from horrible nightmares, but he could do little to cure the child of them, and only let it take its course. At times, Lucis heard Astal begging for someone to kill him - that it was not worth it to live anymore - because of the pain. But Lucis's solution to this was to merely give the child drugs to inebriate him and make him compliant. Certain herbs enabled a man to feel a pleasurable high, while suffering horrible withdrawals, and it proved wonders upon the child for the first few days. But that moment of freedom had seemingly broken him, leaving the child void of personality by the time it was to free him. Lucis had been concerned, sensing that the outer shell had been silent while the inner turmoil continued to break at what was left of Astal's soul, but he could do little to solve it. As a final precaution, the priest had used a Hypno in order to make him forget what happened that past week before handing him to his mother.

The woman's outbursts disgusted Lucis, not because she may have found out but because of her descent having been inferior to even hope to come in par to the priest, but little could have been done. Astal had been responsive, but the boy's lack of interest in anything and detached connection to the world was a sign of his soul. Lucis had been glad that the King had been off in the War to not have seen such a sight, but Queen Lynn had still taken the child to the Sea Kingdom despite Lucis's pleas. The priest was concerned that the boy whose important had suddenly ascended to the Gods themselves being taken to the Sea Kingdom was foul and unworthy of the wretched race. Still, she had done so without Lucis having been able to stop her.

Much to his amazement once they had returned, Astal had developed a personality. He spoke of a Princess that he had met there, stating that she had been a fun playmate, which disturbed the priest in several different levels. How could have the child whom suffered such nightmares, trauma, drugs, and hypnosis returned to being that same boy he was weeks before? Either way, it made Lucis realize that there was something to learn from it all. If Astal was to become the Symbol that Lucis wished for, he would have to somehow prevent him from developing this personality further - the Sea Kingdom was something to prevent the boy from seeing.
