Oook....durin the day, for the last few days, when I wasn't at my sad excuse for a job or sleep, I've been playin The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe for the GameCube.
FIRST! I would like to take a time out to thank Dragon_Student for getting me totally addicted to the Narnia series, thank my IRL mom for helping me find the complete works book, and thank Forby with surprising me by sending me the game in the mail.
Screen shots and more info (IGN)
The story follows the movie, as to be expected, and takes a few detours in it as well. Certain scenes were skipped, like my favorite scene, for example, of Aslan attackin the witch at the end. But the game also threw in a few scenes to make the stages a little longer and in an attempt to make it more fun and interestin.
There is alot of sneakin around in the game. In several stages you had to hide yourself from people, and Narnian creatures within a certain time limit. biggrin
Out of all the stages, I like the Beavers' tunnel stage the most. it wasn't just repetively killing wolves and ghouls, which you do ALOT of, trust me.
In the movie, Susan, Lucy, and Peter (three of the main characters) and two beaver are running from a pack of wolves that Jadis, or the White Witch (the big baddie) sent after them. They escape through a tunnel hidden in the beavers' home and into the open.
You had to pace yourself in that stage and switch between Susan and Peter running back and forth throughout the bored doing three things.
1) Using Susan's ranged attack to keep the wolves from breaking down the beavers' wooden barrier
2) Running halfway through the stage and using Susan's range attacks again too keep boggles from knocking down a large boulder and bridging the gap between thier cliffs and the cavern where the children were
3) Killing a stupid ghoul that would come and kidnap the beaver and starts running throughout the board to keep away from you, which was a pain since the only way to beat that stage is to keep the creatures at bay while Mr. Beaver chewed open an escape through another wooden barrier. I used Peter for this cause he is the strongest and kills the quickest.
The graphics
7/10
I give it this cause the enviornments were beautiful. But the Characters and enemies were a bit lacking compared to the graphics of other recent games. confused I didn't even want to look at Jadis. She was ugly enough to me in the moive.
Fighting Style
8/10
Twas fun. You get to use a number of attacks and special attacks in the game. And even an assortment of team attacks. Like Susan and Lucy's "Rain of Fire" which was my favorite team attack, and Lucy's "Wolf tame" , another fave. Sadly though...Lucy isn't much for attacking enemies. She doesn't hit very hard, and only has one attack. But if you use her attack correctly, and have unlocked certain abilties in the game for her, you can ride on the backs of wolves, ghouls, minaboars, and other enimes and make them attack other foes. This is maily cause she can heal herself and the other kids while in play.
Susan specializes in range attacks. She uses different projectiles depending on the stage. The choice is between snow balls, tennis balls (in the third stage only), and of course, a bow and arrow.
Peter and Edmund (the other main ch.) have the same exact attacks, including the unlockable abilities. While these attacks are useful and can even be pretty to look at, you'll most likely be better off button mashing with these two and susan (when she has no bow.) When Peter and Edmund team up though, it's not only fun to look at when you first see it, but pretty useful as well.
Battles
5/10
While the fighting stile was fun, the battles themselves was just one big pain in the a**. Too much repetition for me. it seemed the same with an exception of a few stages where you have to defeat a sertain type of enemy to progress. But even then, it's the same damn thing.
Yes, the foes do get harder as you progress through the story, but again, it's still the same thing as the other stages. Even the very last stage where you fight Jadis, tis the same, cept you have to watch Jadis and attack her with the right character and attack in order to kill her. but while you wait for her to become vulnerable again, you're fighting the same enemies as the earlier stages; werewolves, minaboars, ogers, etc.
oh yeah. dont even get my started on the AI. The enemies seemed fairly smart, but of the other kids you control? Pssh... they help out alittle bit ya know? but when I really need the help, they stand there like mindless idiots and i have to switch between them to get them involved.
That reminds me, when one of them die, the game ends and starts you off from the last checkpoints. You can switch just before your last blow to stay in the game. Grante the child will still be hit, but wont take any damge. They only take damage when they're hit while you're using them. Like...if both Peter and Lucy where to get fwapped by an oger, and you're controlling Lucy, they'd both be hit and fall, but only Lucy would actually loose HP.
Music
3/10
Ok...this may be puttin it mildly to anyone that has played the game, but...THE MUSIC SUCKS!
I mean, sure, it did fit the story, events, and happenings of the game, but when you hear the same god-damn song for each and everystage, you tend to wanna mute your TV and put a CD in your CD player or somethin. After while, the music is just tuned out of your mind while you play, until it changes, and you hear and recognize the mood in the it sets before tuning it out again.
But the music itself does fit the game, i just wish they had a variety of songs in there instead of playin the same 4 or 5 throughout the freakin game.
Story Progression
6/10
Like I said before, follows the movie pretty well. The cut scenes are from the movie itself, then switch over to game graphics in the middle of it whenever the stage is about to begin.
But as i said before, they skip quite scenes. and if you didn't watch the movie or read the book, you're gonna feel as though you missed somethin or just get lost in the story entirely.
Over all
7/10
Tis a great game. Better than most movie games to me anyway. And I enjoyed playing it.
+ I like the number of attacks
+ some of the stages and bosses were just too much fun.
+ Lots of unlockable, from new abilites to screte boards.
- There are only 15 boreds if you include everything but the bonus stages.
- The music and repetative battles were a pain in the neck
- the graphics on the chracters and enimies were....not as good as the surroundings.
-HOW MANY TIMES I GOT MY a** KICKED BY JADIS BEFORE I BEAT HER! ...but this one doesn't count as a negative...I just wanted to get that out there. xd
