Gambino fandom...examined from the future, in brief. |

It's strange and thought-provoking to look back at this content with the perspective I have now; not only am I older and good at pretending to be wiser, but the past few years I've been doing significant thinking and learning about abuse, as a whole. I root for Johnny because of the loyalty I've built up and the interactions I've had with y'all over the years, but I will admit...if the Gambinos were real people...I can't say I'd root for him, let's put it that way. I don't like to say anything stronger because I'm still for him. Because even though, if the two were real, he would be a terrible person who really ******** up his kid...they aren't real.
And yeah, the story isn't exactly terrific in how it addresses his parenting, though it has been addressing it in bits and pieces recently, being less "hilariously ******** parent-child relationship" and more "well actually Gino doesn't find it quite so hilarious and he's gonna say so". And s**t, I could write an essay blasting him to bits over what we know of his childrearing techniques; "he loved/thought highly of Gino deep down" doesn't cut it, nor does "he treats everyone else with the same disregard, so that's just who he is". He's boisterous and loud and crazy and a lovable fictional character, but I could go into pages upon pages on why, from a different point of view, he's actually...well, not.
But if I ever do that, it'll be solely for the purpose of dumping all my thoughts out somewhere, cause I often have lots of thoughts about lots of things and sometimes they like being dumped out.
Now dammit, I'll support whatever fictional character I support, for whatever damn reason, even if I'm not condoning him as an inspiration for...pretty much any real-life actions, tbh. I don't think any of us ever quite took him for a role model -- many things, but not that. But I realize now what I didn't ten or five or maybe even two years ago: how he raised Gino is not okay.
However, this is still my place in fandom, ********, at the end of the day, it's okay to root for a character who isn't a shining bastion of humanity. *shrugs*
(I figure if 2010!Gaia somehow merged with 2015!Tumblr, Jas and I and Casper might very well be personae non gratae in that side of the fandom. Kind of a wild thought.)
