Midnight-A story by Kristina Sterling
Chapter 1-
Valery awoke during the night in a cold sweat. She always had nightmares, ever since she was young. She rolled on her side and closed her eyes hoping to fall back asleep. She was alone in the world. Her parents were always working and she had no siblings. She had her friends, and was happy with that. Without her friends she didn't know what she would do. Though she was only sixteen she felt as though she were twenty. Always being on her own, taking care of herself, and doing things around the house. After what seemed like forever Valery slowly drifted off to sleep once more, only to be woken by her annoying alarm clock. She yawned and got out of bed slowly. She stumbled to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. Her black hair mangled, and her blue eyes had bags under them. "I look like a complete mess." She mumbled to herself, as she undressed and hopped in the shower. She was done her shower within ten minutes. She grabbed one of the white towels, and wrapped it around her slim body. Though she wasn't the prettiest looking girl in the world, she wasn't half bad either. She quickly got dressed and headed out the door. She was going to be late if she ate breakfast so she decided to skip it. Valery was only old enough to have her permit, and so she normally just walked to school. She looked up at the bright blue sky and smiled. "Another sunny day in California." She loved it when the weather was warm, and so she and her friends could go to the beach. She arrived at Mountain Vallery High ten minutes before classes started. She walked into the air conditioned school and stood at her regular spot, as she did so every morning. Her friend Court came running up to her. "Hey Val." Said Court. "Did you sleep ok?" Valery smiled. Court was her best friend and she would be lost without her. Valery spoke softly. "Ya, not to bad. I woke up during the night but I fell back asleep. Why do you ask?" Court frowned. "Well maybe it's because you have dark circles under your eyes." Valery shrugged. "Well I can't do anything about that." Court stood next to her on the ramp and watched as a crowd of people flooded by. After chatting about going to the beach then shopping they headed to first period when the bell rang.
Chapter 2-
Valery sat in the back of the classroom with Court. As always they listened to their english teacher Mr. Calahan go on about the usual. Writing essay's, literary elements. It was quite boring actually. Val sat at her desk with her chin in her hand. There was a knock on the door, and a young boy stepped in the classroom. Everybody stared at the newcomer, and waited for Mr. Calahan's directions. Mr. Calahan took a small peice of paper from the boy, and read it. He then looked at the students and spoke in a deep voice. "Alright students. This here is Lucia Delecroix. Let's make sure we all give him a warm welcome." Mr. Calahan looked around the classroom and smiled. He looked back at Lucia. "Mr. Delecroix you can sit in front of Valery. She is in the back row, and she's the only one in that row with an empty desk in front of her." Lucia nodded and did as he was told. He sat in front of Valery, looked back at her and smiled. Then he turned back around in his seat and listened to Mr. Calahan's lecture. Valery whispered to Court. "The name makes it seem as though he's from England or something." Court nodded. Lucia was tall with blonde hair and blue eyes. He was good looking and looked about seventeen. the class seemed as though it would never end when finally the bell rang. The rest of the day seemed the same. Finally the school day was over, and kids were crowding around lockers to get there things and head out the door. Valery grabbed her backpack and headed out the door and onto the grass. She found Cort and spoke softly to her. "I'm going to the library if you want to come. I don't know how long i'll be there for though." Court looked at her and laughed. "There is no way you can ever get me in that public library." "Why not?" Valery said. Court laguhed again. "A.)It's a public library, and B.)I don't read." Valery sighed and rolled her eyes. "Alright then, but you'll regret it." Val and Court stared for a long moment then laughed. They waved goodbye, as Valery headed off the the library and Court headed home.
Chapter 3-
It only took Valery ten minutes to get to the library because she was a fast walker, and it wasn't that far from the school. She walked up the steps of the library ad slowly opened the large door. She walked inside and smiled as a cool breeze from the A.C. hit her. Walking over to one of the book shelves she saw somethnig that caught her eye. Carefully she took the book off the shelf and read the title. Lucia, The Story of a True Vampire. She pictured Lucia sitting there in front of her with his dark hooded sweater on. She wondered why he would wear that in a place like California. "There must be a good reason" She thought. Valery then went over to the computer to check her mail and do some research for school. She then got up from the computer and walked to the counter. Looking at the clock she realized it was getting late, and she needed to get home. She checked the book out walked out the door, and headed home.
Chapter 4-
Valery clutched the diary in her hand. She figured that it was amost time for dinner. Though she would be the one making it....For herself. She walked in silence and noticed the sky was starting to turn a light shade of pink. Valery held the diary and examined it. It was a velvet red and the writing in the book lookedas though it was hand written. The writihg inside the book was a neat sort of script style font. The pages were a milky cream color, and the edges of the pages were a little folded. While she was examining the book she hit something hard and fell back. She looked up and saw Lucia standing there looking down at her. Immediatly she spoke. "I'm so so sorry. I should have payed more attention to where I was going." Lucia held out his hand and smiled. "It's alright, I wasn't exactly paying much attention either." SHe took his hand and stood up. Lucia spoke again in a deep voice. "So what is it that your reading?" Valery handed him the bool and looked up. the sky was becoming much darker now. She looked back at Lucia and noticed a worried look on his face. "Lucia are you alright?" She spoke softly to him. Lucia quickly handed her the book. "Ya, I..I'm fine." He started to walk away. Valery Shouted out to him. "So I guess i'll see you later then." Lucia looked back. "Ya..Later." He then walked away. "Well that was odd." Thought Valery. She shook the thoughts from her mind and headed home.
Chapter 5-
Valery arrived at her home at 6:30. She walked inside and set the diary on the kitchen table. She knew nobody was home, and set out to find something to eat within the kitchen. She found a box of frozen Tostitos and set them in the microwave for the given time. Valery quietly sat down, and opened up the diary. She read the diary outloud.
"October 30th 1906,
Today was a cruel and dark day. As it is everyday. Lucia is my name, and I am a vampire. I look seventeen but on this day I have become nineteen. Like everyone else I have a story. Two years ago today I was turned. I was turned by a man named Lex. I do not know why he turned me. All I can remember is walking around at night in town when I was attacked. When I awoke, what seemed like a few hours later I was filled with a sudden hunger. This hunger wasn't normal. It wasn't for food. It was for blood. I began to feed on people. Drinking their blood until my hunger was gone. The town was soon filed with missing people, and un explained deaths. Then one night I was being careless. As I was feeding I got caught by some men. Then the whole town new what I was and what I had done. I was chased away from my home by the towns folk. I was banished, and could never again return. It was then that I knew I was doomed to damnation, alone."
Valery was then interrupted by the beeping of the microwave. Her food was now done. She ate her food in silence, thinking about what she had just read. She finished eating and put her dishes in the sink. Slowly Valery went upstairs, the diary in her hand. Later on that night Valery read the book some more then headed off to bed.
Chapter 6-
That night Valery dreamt. She dreamt about Lucia in his town feeding off people. Then how he was banished. Then suddenly her dreamed changed into a nightmare. It was dark out, and she was running. She couldn't figure out what she was running from. She ran past the library, then past the school. Valery then found herself standing in front of the park. She ran into the park and sat down on the bench breathing heavily. The hairs on her neck stood up. She felt as though someone were watching her. Suddenly something grabbed her. She opened her mouth to scream but nothing came out. She turned around and saw a pair of glowing blue eyes starring at her. She then felt something sharp suddenly pierce her neck. This time when she screamed she screamed loud. Valery's eyes suddenly opened, and quickly she sat up in bed. She felt around her neck but could feel no puncture wounds. "It was just a dream." She told herself. She wiped the sweat off her forehead and layed back down. A few hours later she drifted to sleep once more.
