Capt. Deep went back to camp and approached Will, who was tied on the left side of her throne. She whispered, because the chief was on the other side of the throne and could understand her.
She said “Will, I promise ye, you won’t be eaten. Just follow my lead, and run when I tell ya to.”
She sat before the crowd, and the drums ceased. The chief stood before the crowd, and said to the people. “Today we shall live anew!” In their native tongue, so neither Capt. Deep nor Will could understand everything he said. “The trees have their moist soil from below, and we can not drink it. We have had to eat our neighbors flesh and drink their blood. Many of you can remember from before, when we lived peacefully. Then the rain ceased.
‘We had no food or water, and our main sources of food were taken away. Sacrifices were made in honor to the gods, and now the sign has come. We have done well my brothers, and tonight the god who was sent unto us shall feast, and it shall rain to bring us new life!”
Cheers rose up from the crowd, and the chief moved over to the right side of the throne. He said to Capt. Deep “You must eat the stranger, and then you must kill and eat me.”
Capt. Deep was handed a primitive weapon, and Will was brought forth. Capt. Deep tossed their weapon aside, and the crowd gasped as she drew her sword; the weapon thought that only a god could wield!
Capt. Deep placed the blade over Will’s back, and instead of splitting Will in half, she cut away his ropes, and Will broke the ropes from his feet.
Will ran behind the throne, not knowing where to go. “Translate for me, chief.” Capt. Deep said, smirking to the small, round man. “Native cannibals, I leave you not as a god, but as a pirate! And you shall all remember this day as the day you were fooled by the feared Captain Deep!”
And she jumped from her throne and ran; she dragged Will along with her, and they could hear the angry natives chasing them, with troches and weapons. Capt. Deep heard something off in the distance that didn’t quite sound like drums or the cry of natives; in fact she couldn’t quite tell what it was. She disregarded it, and continued to run on towards the beach where the crews waited on the ship.
The two could finally see the beach, and the ship resting just outside of the sand bar. They swam on, and Capt. Deep saw a dark sky above them. The natives were silent behind them, and they were staring at the sky, the dark clouds above. They only meant one thing as far as they could tell; rain. Rain which meant the drought was over, and they could resume eating their normal diets.
Rain drops sprinkled down on the water, and thunder clapped. Capt. Deep and Will climbed aboard the ship, and watched the natives dance with joy as the rain came down, and the ship sailed away from the thunderstorm, and left the natives to their rejoicing.
