Thought Shards
Every once in a while I'll post something, be it thoughts or what have you.
Colors?
You know what I can't understand? Why do colors immediatly put you into a category? Like, when you think of pink, you think of preps, right? Why is that? Because the color is happy? Or for instance, when we think of black, or any dark color, we think "goth" correct?
In simpler terms, why do we associate bright colors with preps, and dark colors with goths? Personally, I find it irritating. I'll find a yellow shirt that a like, one thats not "cute with prancing ponies" or something, and when I wear it to school my friends look at me like I'm stupid and laugh, all because of a shirt color.
And another thing. When did this all start? And who started it? Who came up with the defination of prep, and who came up with the difination of goth? And why did they come up with it in the first place?
Please post your replies here, I like reading replies for topics I create about things ^^;

    Not everyone is like that...
    Mmm...
According to Physics, colors don't even exist,
They're determined by the types of waves that hit your eyes...

Let me tell you what I think of when I think of several colors...

When I think of pink, I think of bunnies
When I think of purple I think of royalty, death, plague, wizards, and liches,
When I think of blue I think of water, life, and emollience,
When I think of red I think of blood, life, and death,
When I think of black I think of death and darkness, and Winter
When I think of green I think of snot and illness, and Spring
When I think of yellow I think of the sun and light, and Summer
When I think of brown I think of age, poverty, and Autumn
When I think of white I think of purity, snow, Winter, and ice...

I consider Pink and yellow to be positive energies
Purple, red, black and green are negative energies
White, brown, and blue neutral energies

Brighter colors tend to be associated with brighter things,
While darker colors with darker things,
For example, when you close your eyes, everything is black,
When the lights are gone, everything's dark,
    So black is considered bad,
Ravens are black birds and are said to bring bad luck...
'Tis all about human psychology and emotion really ^_^

Now, why do people categorize in the first place?
    I may not be right,
But I believe there is a psychological part of the human body that desires to do such things,
It makes them easier to manage, easier to identify, and so on...

I don't know the first person who used the word prep,
But I do know that "goth" once referred to a group of germanic people,
    So yeah...

    There you go,
I hoped my Haelix explanations helped you ^_^

So no one has answered you eh Xiao? At least, not definitively.

    Okay. Here goes nothing.

Haley bob and poison both have it part right. It does have to do with close mindedness and idiocy. However, it's a lot more than that. Here's one way of looking at it.Scarlet was pretty close if we agree with this point of view.

Humans are social creatures, we instinctively do things to help us get along with other humans. That's why we dislike people who don't get along. Think, if I just spammed ******** YOU repeatedly, you'd resent it, and everyone would think I was a jerk. So, we're social creatures.

One of the ways we get along with other humans, is by knowing them. It's true. If you don't think of someone else as human at all, then you don't care about them. You don't care about animals until you attribute some level of "human ness" to them. Like the ability to feel pain or emotion. So to get along with other humans we pretend to know them. The easiest way to know them is by assuming that they're like a mold.

You see a cow, you assume it goes moo.

You see an emo and you assume he goes boo hoo.

See what I mean? It's a way of making things easier for us. You don't care to find out about every single cow, to see if the red one goes "maa" or the black one goes "LA CUCARACHA, LA CUCARACHA". You do it without thinking, because it doesn't matter to you. The root of the problem then, is we don't care enough about other people to find out if the go moo or no. We just assume because they fit into a mold, that they're identical to that mold. How we could solve the problem? We don't think enough about other people, because we think too much about ourselves. If we thought about others more, we'd find out if other people mooed or not. Of course, that's only one way to look at it, and not the way I typically see things. If you want a further explanation, let me know and I'll tell you the reasons I see behind it.

Sheep. People are often like sheep. They follow so easily, they fall into flocks and herds so they won't be picked individually. They do what humans like themselves do. But that's kind of irrelavent. Certain types of people like certain things. As humans, we learn from our surroundings. When we see birds with feathers all the time and never fur, we learn that birds have feathers. Now, when I said certain types of people like certain things, I meant certain personalities are attracted to various colors. For example, nerds seem to like stripes and mis-matching colors biggrin

Now comes the sheep. Someone noticed that, that certain people seem to like similar things... And they said "Hey, look, all goths love black". Well, not only are people like sheep, but they'll accept things that seem plausible. So you get someone popular saying "oh look, all the goths wear black", and people notice" hey, that SEEMS to be right, plus, this really popular person is saying it..." and they began to believe it. Then a ripple effect occurs. It spreads. A kid transfers, tells everyone that she hangs out with at her new school that black is a goth color. All the people who talk with her mention that. It spreads.

Then, the "goths" who love black take it up. It's not a stereotype to them, it's an identity. It helps define who they are. "We are the goths, we love black" becomes a mantra. So what might have faded after the popular people stopped using it, becomes the cry of the group that it was the label for. It becomes a sort of shield for them. "Love black, proud goth"

Not explained as well, but I also only have about 4 hours sleep under my belt. Hope you see what I mean... If not I'll asplain again later 3nodding
