I was a viper and he was the mouse.
I struck at him but he took the house.
Viciously and raucously, we tangoed 'til four
when a tremendous knock came to the door
and instantly ceased my fast-growing progress
so, with disappointment, I did digress.
We separated.
For a short while, I retired
and he, hidden, he perspired
as I kept watch from my place
with none but intention of dining with grace.
I sought to create in the mouse such a haze
as to not implore my venomous ways.
I succeeded.
Soon, very soon a friendship grew.
One-sided, but my cohort never knew.
Quickly and rapidly we would play--
enjoying that beautiful carnival all the day.
We spun and swam and danced and rested
'til the mouse saw time he had invested.
He left.
It had grown late, and soon was dark.
By this time, I was as ravenous as a shark.
My dear, sweet friend soon returned to me
from his majestic embassy.
I inquired of another game to exact
But, by-and-by, he would not react.
He had fainted.
Given the circumstance, I took much haste
In giving myself a sweet little taste.
So delicious! And what a nice dinner.
But, oh!, perfect for the winner
of a gallant and noble fight.
Struck down once, yet victor of the night.
