As I approached, it seemed as though the man had been expecting me. Well, he was a ninja, after all, and it wasn't like I could hide that I was pretty much stalking him. He waited for me and when I was close enought o speak, he cut me off just as I was about to say 'excuse me'. "Listen, kid," he began, "I know what you want, I've seen it a million times, but I don't think you know what you're asking."
Of course, I wasn't about to let him stand there and tell me I didn't know what I was doing. I was pretty sure I knew exactly what I was doing, pretty sure. "I want to be a ninja. If you do not train me, I will just find someone else." I said. The ninja seemed a bit amused and said, "That determined, huh?" "I have a purpose. I'm not just asking because I think it is cool to be a ninja or because I want to kick some bully's butt, ya know. I have a very important mission to complete before I die."
The man said nothing more for a long time. He stared at me as though trying to determine if I was telling the truth. After a while, he focused on my eyes and then closed his own. "Alright, alright. Ya know, I see a little of myself in you, kid. You might be surprised, but we are a lot alike. I too have a purpose and I can use you to accomplish my goals while helping you reach yours at the same time. It seems like we can both benefit so I don't see why we shouldn't team up."
Suddenly, it was like my whole world brightened. For so long I had felt it was covered in grey and darkness, but everything would be different now. I, of course, didn't think it would be all sunshine and rainbows for becoming a ninja would be one of the most difficult things I would ever do. Still, anything that brought me closer to avenging my mother was well worth whatever pain and hardship it envolved.
"My name is Sayuri." I said, offering my hand. He shook it firmly, his larger hand swallowing mine, and said, "Call me Tatsuo."
