My speech for Speech Class

Good morning, class. Thousands of teenagers minds are being wasted by this piece of technology, says many parents. It has helped bring the ruination of the United States culture, says many politicians. Have you guessed what I'm talking about yet? I'm talking about video games. It seems that every politician and parent that I speak with claim that video games rot the minds of those who play them. However, I'm here to paint you a different picture.

When a child does something violent, a parent will most certainly blame anything but themselves. There are numerous websites against video games, one of the most notable is The Mothers Against Videogame Addiction and Violence or MAVAV for short. Politicans hoping to gain popularity will go along with the opinions of these parents. Why target movies? Its not like todays movies don't have violence and sexuality. These arguements by parents and politicians are taken out of context and shouldn't be acknowledged without knowing all the facts. Multi-player video games have been known to enhance childrens social interactions. If a child is anti-social, perhaps it is their dispotion or perhaps the parents fault for not allowing their childen enough social interaction with other children. A video game should be approached much like a movie, it has ratings for certain audiences and a parent should take the time to actually sit down with their child and watch them play the game.

Allow me to share a few more benefits of playing video games. Problem solving skills can be developed through certain role playing games. Spatial reasoning is necessary to succeed at many games -- call it mathematical thinking if you liike, or geometric reasoning. For aspiring writers: world-building skill that they need to develop continuity within their stories can be learned. Even those who don’t write much will enjoy this and gain critical thinking skills from working with these games. Those are just but a few of the skills that can be gained from playing video games.

In conclusion,I hope that I have opened up your eyes and explained that video games are not just about violence, they can be rather helpful in developing skills that prove quite helpful.
