School
In a small quiet town the rain was pouring down, and the clock reads six thirty in the morning. He was watching the cars go by his house, and he sighed knowing today was going to be dull. He hoped the rain would go away, but he couldn't count on it. He lived in such a small town, and it rained constantly in March. The sounds were forgotten, when he heard his brother tell him to wake up, and get moving or he was going to be late to school. He forgot to do his math homework last night, and had a good excuse for it. He just hoped his teacher would understand, but he guessed he could check with Andrew to make sure he did it right.
He was picturing she would be at the entrance waiting for him, so they could walk to their first class together. He pictured her waving at him with a big smile on her face, and holding her books close to her chest. He would ask her about what she did after school yesterday, and she would respond with being on her computer or writing emails to people around the world. Then he would smile, and tell her about his day after school. He would make it worth listening to. These are some of the thoughts that ran through his mind, while in the car with his mom and brother on the way to school. She had been his best friend since Elementary school. He could tell her about his thoughts and worries, and not get laughed at. He also would like to add she was the kindest person he knew, and deep down he didn't want her to ever go away.
He grabbed his backpack out of the car, and waved goodbye to his mom and brother. Sixth grade was a lot harder then fifth, but he was very happy he had classes with his best friend Luna. She was in his class last year and they were always constantly talking, and hanging out at Recess. Luna never left him out on what she was feeling or thinking about. He entered the school observing kids scrambling to their lockers or talking to each other. He spotted her right away by the cafeteria entrance talking to her friend Issac. He went over to her and hugged her from behind. She turned around, and looked him over noticing he was wearing shorts in this rainy weather. He truly was an odd kid, she thought before hugging him back. Some kids were staring at them clueless, but it was how they greeted each other.
"So tell me you did your homework this time!" She says, while looking at him. She could already tell he didn't even think about doing it. Luna wants to hug him again, but she pulls him aside, and looks at him long and hard. She was trying to give a full effect on him that she worried he might not pass sixth grade. She watches Issac disappear into the cafeteria, and now they are alone for the moment. He races down the hallways and outside to escape her yelling at him, but she follows him outside in the pouring rain. Her long dark brown hair sways slightly in the mild wind, and her big brown eyes are staring into his soul. Your eating me up alive Luna, he thinks before plopping himself up on the bench. He looked older when he was thinking, and she could always tell when something was nagging at the back of his mind. He would sigh and then stare at her. She plopped up next to him, and leaned back while leaning against him. He wrapped his arms around her, and she heard him whisper something to her lightly. His silky voice being vibrated, while he placed his head on her shoulder.
She watched the rain come down harder, and placed her right hand out to feel the cold rain. She laughed finding this was what she lived for, and knew Alec was smiling. She turned around facing Alec, and cocked her head to meet his eyes. "Alec you really should do it!" She uttered out still feeling his warm hands on her stomach. He sat there silent, and reserved not ready to talk about it. He didn't think he should go into the reasons why he chose to not do it. She would give him that disappointed face he hated looking at. Alec stared at her blank, and not showing her any expression. "It's not due till forth period anyways," he reminded her slowly watching the cars pass by. He could see her thinking again, and this put him in a bad mood. Now she knew he would be fussy all afternoon. Luna leaned over, and tickled him finding him instantly laughing. This made her happy.
"Don't be sad okay!" She asked him to be happy, but he was always frowning when he was deep in thought or confused on a subject. She had known this frown for a long time. He would cross one of his legs, and place a book on his lap. She could always see the leg moving up and down when he was reading the book. Luna watched him chew on his pencil or pen when he was thinking about a math problem. His eyes glued to the page, and ignoring everything around him. These things were noticed because she found them important for her to remember always. His skin a bit darker then hers, and his face always showing confused emotion. The way he was passionate about science and cars, or taking apart the pen parts and timing himself to put them back together again. Luna wanted to always know these things about him, and how kind he was.
"Okay then," he whispered. He was noticing they had fifteen more minutes before class started. He wanted to stay like this for a bit more, liking the silence surrounding them. Not like inside which was noisy and gossip was circling around that he didn't want to hear about. She found this small town comforting, and was thinking that Alec and her would know each other through the ups and downs of their long lived life. She had to look up to find Alec was holding something out to her, and she looked at it. A piece of milk chocolate, and she smiled taking it and unwrapping it. It tasted wonderful, and she thanked Alec with a big hug. She was noticing some caramel was left on his lip. She chuckled while trying to tell him, but he closed his eyes and inhaled the scents surrounding him. Alec took eight minutes to enjoy himself before opening his eyes and watching Luna's hair dripping with water. She really is a wild soul! He thought while meeting her dark brown eye's and smiling. This indeed would be the highlight of his day.
He just remembered after school there was a Saint Patrick's Dance, and his mom told him he could stay after a while to attend it. He enjoyed the Cakewalk more then the dancing part in the gym. The only cool thing about having a dance in the gym, is that the bleachers were cool to climb and it was dark. He enjoyed playing hide and seek with Luna and their friends. The teachers never minded just as long as they were careful, and didn't get hurt. He looked at her watch, and noticed they had three minutes to be in the classroom. They hopped off the ledge, and smiled. They headed inside. Their classroom was on the right coming in, and they stepped in with muddy shoes. It was scary how they walked in tune with each other. They took their seats right next to each other, and got out their textbooks and paper. Alec was already chewing on his pen. and looking at the chalkboard to read what page they were supposed to be on for the day. The bell rang for the other kids to pile into the classroom, and Alec smiled at her.
"Going to the Dance after school?" He asked writing down the assignments on his paper. She was too also writing as she responded "Of course Alec," now looking at the occupied seat. He nodded going back to his writing, and she stared at him curious. "That's cool!" He answered, while getting his colored pencils out of his backpack. "We should figure out where to meet after school," she whispered watching Alec smile at this request, and now she was worried. Alec watched Luna grab his orange colored pencil, and he shrugged "How about you meet me by my last class.....," he said taking his orange colored pencil back. The teacher began to talk, and they were quiet now while listening to their teacher speak. "Sounds good," she wrote back on the piece of paper she held in her hand. Alec grinned happily, and he couldn't believe he had three more classes, until lunch. His fingers shook, underneath him as he tried to keep up with the teacher, and the different notes she was passing him. He cursed his brother for keeping him up so late last night, but it was something else he couldn't put his finger on. Andrew had passed them paper's for an assignment they would start tomorrow
and Alec read them to pass time. His mind was all over the place right now.
Luna had asked him something, and the teacher was looking at him hard. Luna had put her hand over his to stop him from shaking them so much, and Andrew gave them weird faces. Luna didn't care at the moment, and saw that Alec had stopped shaking. This made her smile big. She found his eyes always calmed her down, even when she was angry or in doubt. The little things he did just made up for her not thinking about the worst. Her mouth was upturned and she went back to what the teacher was saying, and doodled while he talked to her. For now she could forget to be normal, and follow his gaze to where it held. His big light brown eyes just waiting to be looked at. To be seen!
