Well, I've decided that I should probably use my journal since I haven't... ever...
So we're going to talk about books. Should be fun. Possibly.
Anyway, we're going to start Chris Wooding's book Storm Thief.
Picked this one up... gosh, must have been two years ago now. It's a nice little
dystopian number. Not to long, pretty light. I loved how cinematic Wooding's writing
can be though. And how delicate. Some of his description is just... lovely. I don't
know how to properly describe it.
But you probably want a summary. I'll give you what the author provides becuase I suck at summaries:
_____ Orokos is a city of chaos. For as long as anyone can remember, the city has
been lashed by probability storms, that change anything they touch. Streets are
rearranged, children turned to glass, rivers break their banks. Nothing is stable.
Everyone is vulnerable.
_____ Rail and Moa: two thieves from the ghettoes. Rail’s been bitter at life ever since
the Storm Thief stole his breath. Moa just wants to get away, to a land where things
are better. But there is nowhere else other than Orokos, and the city won’t let them
leave anyway. <span id="test29332029">. . .</span><br/><div id="post29332029" style="display:none; margin-right:75px;">
_____ Then they find an artifact: a device that opens doors. Something that anyone in
the city would kill for. And it will lead them to the dark secret at the heart of Orokos…
______ Storm Thief is another light romp through daisy-filled pastures with… wait, wait,
no it’s not. It’s a grim dystopia where our heroes cling to life by their fingernails. It’s
about order versus chaos, about the storms of adolescence, about hope and
hopelessness. And it’s also about love and dreams and hope and sacrifice, and
how even in the darkest places you can find a light.
Trust me, this book is fascinating. It's fast paced and original, and just an engaging
story. Well, I found it original at least. Some one may end up disagreeing with me
on this. I admit, I am not as well read as I'd like to be. And there are some
tossbacks to things like Soylent Green and scenes that would thrill the sort
that enjoy movies like 28 Days Later. This is actually one book
that I would be very excited to se turned into a movie. Sure, they'd screw it up like
they always do, but there is a great chase scene that just screams to be put on
the silver screen. Not to mention the probability storms, which are described as
beautiful auroras of brilliant light. I'd love to see it.
And for those who like a nice subtle romance, Rail/Moa is a great 'ship. It's one of
those romances that is there, but never really said in so many words, never
actually defined. If you watch for the occasional touch or look through the story,
you can imagine the 'ship is there. But it's never quite realized. Dunno. I just really
liked that aspect of it. whee
Well, for fear of rambling on forever about this, I'm going to quit here. I think I'm not
going to be a very good reviewer... Don't know if this was actually helpful at all. sweatdrop
If you've got interest in this though, I suggest checking out the website. You can also
read an excerpt from this book. I also suggest looking into his other books. I've also
read The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray and Poison, both of which I may review in time.
I just love this guy's stuff. 3nodding Which probably makes me unjustly biased in his favor...
So feel free to take what I say with a few grains of salt.
