Chapter 1 - Uncovered
Surrie paced her small bedroom, checking her watch every so often. Her heels clicked on the worn hardwood floor as she walked back and forth, agitation radiating from her every pore. Her boyfriend Aiden should have been there by now and he still had not showed up, or even bothered to call. Again she checked her watch and then went to the window to stare out of it. With a sigh, she gave up the pacing and plopped down on her bed. He wasn't coming. Surrie kicked off her heels and laid on the bed, throwing her arm over her eyes. He had stood her up on the most inportant day of her life...her birthday. Tears formed in her eyes as she thought about spending her birthday alone again. Pushing the thought away, she stood and headed towards the bathroom.
After getting out of the shower and throwing on a pair of torn sweats, Surrie laid curled in her bed as tears streamed down her face. It was the same every year. Twenty - three long lonely years. Another session of sobs wracked her body as she thought about her life. For once she thought she would finally have someone to spend this painful day with and he had stood her up.A crash in the other room though had shaken her from her reverie. With one swift movement that almost seemed cat-like, she was crouched on the floor next to her bed. Wide-eyed, she thought to herself on how quick she moved but shook the thought away and quietly headed into the other room. Surrie hid in the shadows as she watched the figure curse softly and look around.
