Childhood
"Kinesra!" The small silver-haired 8 year old called. Her ribs were easily showing through the ragged dress she wore and her bare, bloody feet pounded the ground as she ran towards her only friend in life. Her dark green eyes widened as a burning wooden barrel catapulted out of a recently exploded building and landed directly in front of her. Screams echoed in her ears as she ran, ignoring the pain as other villagers ran into her, elbowing her out of their path.
It didn't matter if she were injured, or even if she didn't make it out alive. She was just the little slave girl to that ugly man, Hamerlin. Slaves didn't matter except for when they forgot to do a chore. Then they were beaten and were refused food for several days. This was Kinesra and Yami's lives.
There is a planet called Tamaran and in it a main land mass known as Illyria. Illyria is divided up into several sections. One of the most desolate of all the sections is the Ruins. Somewhere in the vicinity of this place was the small no-name town of which these villagers lived. They lived in harmony as they called it. However, their 'harmony' can be more clearly defined as 'no more than 5 people were attacked and/or killed on a daily basis'. It was a rough town, where everyone attacked each other just for the sake of it, or because they were bored. Though there wasn't much money to go around, women would still have to tuck their small purses in between their breasts just to hide it. And were you a flat-chested woman, its a shame to be you.
Yami and Kinesra had worked for this man, Hamerlin, as long as they could remember. They were both 8 years old and didn't know when their birthdays were or anything about themselves other than their names and what each other looked like. They had to use reflections from water to see themselves, and when they did, it wasn't always a pretty sight.
Kinesra was a boy tall for his age and had long black hair that looked deep purple in the light. His clothing was made of a shirt and pants as ragged as Yami's clothing and he too had no shoes. He also has a lot of potential for being extremely handsome later in life. If he made it that far.
Another town, a stronger town, had been planning to rid this world of the tiny poor town that often stole from them. The attack was scheduled for today.
Kinesra ran swiftly around the fire emanating from the barrel and he reached out to Yami's outstretched hand, together they ran with the crowd, if not running faster than most of the adults. They reached the house owned by Hamerlin and they dodged around the side. They scaled the makeshift ladder up onto the roof and lay quietly on the slanted side farthest from the attackers.
Yami released Kinesra's hand and he sits up slightly to stare at her, his eyes silently asking her if she was crazy. She motioned for him to stay there as she crawled over to the edge of the roof. Arrows flew over her head and planted themselves in the backs of the other villagers. They fell, one by one, as she watched, and soon, none were left. None had escaped. Except them.
The ladder shook under Yami's scarred hands and she looked down to see one of the attackers, holding his dagger in his mouth, climbing up to get to them. She tried desperately to push the ladder away from the wall, to make him fall off, but he was too heavy, and he had soon made it to the top. Several other men followed him up.
"Hey Cap'n! I gots a couple live uns up her! Shall we take a couple slaves or kill em?" He called back down. He stood still for a minute, listening, then nodded and reached for Yami.
Thinking quickly, she used a tactic she had taught herself. She grabbed his outstretched palm, bent the hand back, and violently twisted it to the side. She heard and felt the bone snap. The man yelled and jerked his hand back, holding it against his body. Water swelled in his eyes as he attempted to glare menacingly at the small girl who had defied him. Yami stood as straight as was possible on the heavily slanted roof and glared back at him, her piercing gaze burning a hoe straight through his head. The man's other and went to his head as if it were in pain. finally, another man went around him and grabbed Yami, tossing her to the side like an old doll. He grabbed Kinesra and, before the boy could react, threw him off the roof. Another man below caught him and threw him into a bag.
AS soon as she had landed, Yami had sprung back onto her feet, just in time to see her lifelong companion go overboard.
"Kinesra!" She tried to cry out, but her voice was long gone. She saw his emotionless dark eyes disappear into the sac, which was thrown onto a wagon and wheeled off.
"C'mon. let's kill the last one." The man said, seething. a man behind him drew a sword and started foreward.
She wasn't thinking anymore. It was through mere instinct and will to survive that she brought her knee up straight into his crotch and grabbed his now-fallen sword.
She had only even watched men swordplay. She hadn't acctually practiced it. But somehow, it came easily, and with a quick upward thrust, she drove the blade through the man's chest and brought him to the ground.
As he fell to his knees, the man behind him, still on the ladder, sat still in disbelief. He recovered, but a little too late. He looked up into Yami's sinister eyes and felt the bite of the blade in his neck.
Looking over the side of the ladder as the second victim fell to the ground. A third man was making his way up the towards her now. She threw the blade straight to the ground, catching the man on the way down. The sword stuck into the ground through the man's lifeless body and wobbled a bit from the vibrations made form hitting the ground.
Yami then pushed the ladder away from the roof and jumped onto it as it made its own way to the ground. When if had fallen almost flat, she jumped off the end and rolled on the ground. She quickly turned and ran over the ladder to get to her sword, which had settled niicely into between the ladder's prongs. She wrenched it out of the ground and the man's body, then turned back aground to leave.
"Well, well. I think we got a live 'un here." A man's voice drifted to her and she spun, sword out in front of her.
4 men had her surrounded, forcing her to back against the wall of the house. The man directly in front of her held out a 9mm and aimed at her, right in between the eyes. He fingered the trigger, hoping to scare Yami into submission. However, she lunged at him, and pulled a large chunk of flesh from his leg. The man yelled and the gun fell, firing off a round when it hit the ground. The other three people fell and Yami pounced on the continuously firing gun. She picked it up swiftly and removed the rock wedged agianst it trigger.
She put the gun under her arm and tugged at the fabric at her waist. She folded it and carefully made a hole through it with e sword. When the hole was made, she slid the sword all the way through, up to the hilt. Now with her makeshift belt holding a shortsword, and a 9mm, she made her way towards the area whene she had last seen Kinesra, but the wagon was long gone. Unbroodingly, she quickly found the tracks and followed them at a run.
She had only run several yards when she was confronted again by 5 men and a woman. She raised the gun and fired off half a round. Having never used a gun before either, the kick forced her to take a step back and brace herself.
The gun began clicking after her sixth shot and she dropped it to the ground, realizing it was empty. The woman was the only one left standing and she was holding her upper left arm. A bullet had grazed her arm and the slight trickle of blood ran in between her fingers.
The woman used her uninjured arm to grab a .45 Glock and point it at Yami. But a sword flashed in front of her face, slicing a thin line atop her right eye. Abandoning the gun, the woman grabbed the blade of the sword, thinking she would be injured, but be able to stop the fatal blow. The blade brought the top of her hand cleanly off and continued its deadly journey, driving itself into the woman's chest.
Yami's body was being pushed to the point of complete exhaustion, but her now crazed mind drove her foreward, taking down everyone in her path. Somewhere along her blind path, her finger was broken and a bullet had skimmed her right shoulder. She maimed everyone, whether they were enemies or her own villagers.
When she finally found herself at the front entrance to the village, it was a ghost town. She looked around, her eyes glazed over and her blood-covered weapons dropped. A light snow had begun to fall just as her pale, skinny body colapsed onto her fallen blade.
