The Deadsea Scrolls
Some Walk on Water, But I Walk on Land
Some walk on water, some walk on land
Coming to aid those in need of a hand
Life is white and black, very little gray
Life is white and black, all of us will pay

You see a woman tumble in the street
Do you stop to see, or simply smell the sea?
Only asking for cloth, shelter, and meat
Who do you see, fallen there in the street?

A woman poor in need of sheet and heat
Or a wolf in disguise seeking to cheat
It matters not what you see with your eyes
Not e’en crumples, wrinkles, or quiv’ring thighs

Do you stop to help, do you stop to see?
Or do you keep driving, seeing only the salty sea
What happens one day when the tables turn?
When the milk is from new butter churned?

Then, when white is black, and black is white
What happens on that day, who is to pay?
Maybe one day only one will have to pay
What ‘comes of colors and worried mothers?

Do they fade, or do they become as shade?
The world has darkened, so comes your choice
We must chose well, who should be damned to hell?
We have all conspired, to fill this tired world

With hatred and grief and illness and woe
Ill tidings come to any cornered foe
The box has been opened, you must chose well
Would you condemn all to live in this hell?

Or would you contribute to human need
Provide a haven, no matter the creed
The record wiped clean, history altered
Our future ensured, how could we falter?

Though history be known, future to be
What matters is present, this time, this place
For time is a fickle fiend it oft repeats
Never forget its aged two handed face

For when you break its face and peek inside
Will you simply be pushed off to the side?
Or will you stand and see fate’s gorgon eyes
And the secrets they hold of man’s true guise

Stand and face today your one judgment day
All of your life’s secrets will be revealed
No smudge of soul will escape scrutiny
Not e’en partners committing mutiny

If you pass the great challenge that is life
And whether or not you take a good wife
Whether you toil, bicker or do cause great strife
So take the handle of this once great knife

Cut the bonds now sheer, learn to see things clear
Cut the bonds that tie you here, afraid of fear
Free you will be from your stoniest dream
There to see those who sleep, awake from their scream

Lead who will follow and try to mend this world
That we betrayed before it became unfurled
