My biggest problem with anime is when there are characters that are incredibly awesome and have potential to develop into AWESOME characters, but they take a backseat to horrible, cliche, boring characters as far as screen time goes. Thus the awesome characters don't get a chance to develop because the boring characters are getting all the screen time, and to top all that off, they often aren't spending that time developing either! They're just doing stupid s**t that no one cares about.
Example? Kyo Kara Maoh. My favorite anime ever. Gunter, Gwendal, Yozak, and MuraKen are some of the most awesome characters in anime. They're not horribly cliched characters whose personality you can find in any anime; they're unique. However, all four of them get royally screwed over as far as screen time and development; especially Gunter, as he doesn't even get a flashback. The others do (except maybe MuraKen, but I haven't finished KKM yet).
What is happening during the time Gunter and the other three COULD be developing? More than likely, it's something to do with Conrad. Conrad is SO boring. He's basically Chii from Chobits or Rei Ayanami from Evangelion. He's supposed to be "perfect" and all of his flaws are Cinderella flaws; they aren't anything to make him seem human, they're just endearing. Like he tells bad jokes. That is not a flaw. So most of KKM is WASTED on Yuuri, Wolfram, and Conrad scenes that are designed to make Conrad look like this super awesome guy that everyone would want to be friends with. Let me tell you something; one of my female friends is similar to Conrad in that she's good at everything. The only reason I can stand her is because she's got some flaws. If she didn't have her issues and personality quirks, it'd be SO awkward to be around her, because she's pretty and she's good at almost everything she does. It's her flaws that put me at ease around her. Conrad doesn't have that.
I also gripe about Yuuri. Sure, he's the main character, so it's to be expected that he gets the most screen time. However, if he's going to be the main character and get all of that screen time, shouldn't he be at least close to as interesting as the background characters and not your typical harem lead? Obviously this is wishful thinking, since that issue is not unique to KKM at all, but still. It's so painfully obvious in Kyo Kara Maoh because the characters that get screwed over are SO cool.
