Envious moon
Once a long, long time ago, there were two sisters of equal beauty. Sister Mont and her sister Sonnie were the sprits of the moon and the sun. Always competing for the love of the people far below. Sonnie would spread large rays of light over the people’s crops, for the heaviest to grow big and strong, while also warming the land and waters. Mont, angry at her sisters beautiful ways cast darkness over the lands allowing the people of the world to rest in peaceful darkness, for the crickets to sing their songs to the heavens and for the fires to burn brightly in the black air. Sonnie became infuriated by her sister’s serene habits, and started burning up causing fires to spring from the tall aspen trees burning them to their moss covered roots. Mont frustrated by her sister, as she bullied the trees, started spreading darkness and cooled the air to almost freezing to save the vegetation. The humans trembled and hid from the sisters as the fought.
‘Mont! Sister of mine, this hostility must end! The humans fear us now, and we have done nothing but hardship onto their land!” Sonnie said
“Agreed sister, but how can we do what we need to without getting in each others way and making each other angry?” Mont questioned.
“If I may wonderful sisters of the sun and moon why not share the sky?” A young native girl spoke up. “Sister Mont has the sky for night and sister Sonnie has it for the days.”
“You know sister, I believe the young girl might just be right. I shall go to the west side of the great sky and you to the east. Then we shall both head west in turns.” Mont said.
“Good bye then my sister, till our paths cross again”
and with that Sonnie and Mont went their separate ways till they should cross again.
Thus creating night and day
