...
Why?
Why would anyone in their freaking mind do this? It didn't matter whether they were sane or not.
...
All was quiet again as we lay low in the grass, the winds now shifted so the smell was blowing away from us. It didn't look like those things back there had the capability of actually tracking us down by scent let alone getting out of the ditch.
The silence came, no longer from disturbance, but from some very deep pondering as to who in the hell could've done this and how. One thing was definite. It wasn't a coincidence. All those...children were put there by people or a single person with a mind that wasn't eaten away with the strange disease that caused the dead to walk. If it actually was a disease causing it all.
There was clearly some other substance besides blood in the ditch, a thick, black substance. When had I seen something like that before?
Then it came back to me. The Lab. There had been a field trip. For our Biology class. All bio students were to go, it was mandatory. James and I were in the same class and so we had both gone on that trip. I was sure that he remembered the vat he had seen in the lab filled with the disgusting substance. There was no mistaking it. That was the very thing that cause all those bodies to come to life. And it was man-made, created by scientists who had allowed the substance to seep into the island's water supply either on accident or for an experiment. Something told me it was the latter.
"James. Do you remember that time in the lab?" I had broken the moment's silence.
"...yeah." He didn't look at me when he said it. It was probably too painful for him to talk about it. But now was not a time to be weak.
"So...if the thing was made by people, there should be an antidote right?" I said reveling in the realization. "I mean, no one would purposely try to kill humanity with a disease without an antidote for themselves right?"
"Unless they want to die along with humanity too." Josh's point caught me off guard.
"But there's always someone who wants to live if the matter was created by more than one person. So the antidote was either created and hidden by that person or there's a whole batch of it in the lab." James proffered.
I knew Josh had probably caught on by now. Once the black substance had caught his eye, it was logical to assume that it had something to do with giving life once more to dead limbs.
"Then isn't the answer obvious? We need to get to the lab." I said conclusively.
"But where is it?" James and I glanced at each other, we both knew what the other was thinking.
"Near Nordstrom on Kapiolani Boulevard, directly beneath Ala Moana." We said at the same time.
Josh merely stared at us. "Wow. Since when was there a lab there?"
"Since Joyce and I found it."
...
The Lab we found had been located in the Bodies Exhibit. It was ironic really. All those dead bodies being shown off in one room and then we go ahead and find some stuff that can bring them to life. We would need all the supplies in the world. And the best place to get them was in Walmart.
