(James)
A cold, uncaring wind whistled down the street. And not a sound followed in its wake save for the crinkling of a plastic bag, fallen victim to the breeze. Cars lay abandoned all along the Boulevard and a single newspaper dispenser lay on its side, all its papers covered the blazing headlines, "THE APOCALYPSE".
We had successfully maneuvered ourselves to the gas station, cleared up most of its contents, and set up our temporary base inside its small run-down convenience store.
Joyce passed me a pair of binoculars she had been keen enough to take with her on our way out. I wasn't sure exactly where she'd gotten them, although I had noticed a body earlier near the doorway- It was better to leave unneeded thoughts alone.
"Joyce, could you update Josh on the plans? We've left him hanging enough as it is. And we need him for this to work." I whispered sideways to her, flickering my eyes at the silent form of our quietly sulking friend.
"Sure."
I began my survey of our surroundings.
~
"There's quite a few stray ones by the main entrances to the mall, but as for the side entrances I see at least two. A city full of humans and only a handful roaming the streets. It's strange. It's like they've all gone and gathered somewhere."
"Shouldn't be too bad," said Josh, now fully equipped with what to do. "All we gotta do is cover our scents, which we've already done thanks to all that crap we rolled around in, and just sneak past those bastards using the cars as shields. We already know how slow those guys are. They only have being stubborn-assed mules as an advantage."
"Which can also prove to be a problem," quipped Joyce, her eyes flashing at having such a detail being overlooked. "It will take a number of bullets just to take down one. And they'll keep coming until either we waste enough bullets to disable them or they us."
"Which is why we're gonna lock ourselves into the bodies exhibit. Close all main entrances into that area." I added, just to control the heat a little. "There's an emergency exit in the exhibit and I'm sure the room won't go up in hell just from opening the damn thing seeing as most of the electricity should be down. After we find the lab and get what we came for, we hightail it out and through that emergency door. And we're going up not down. That should bring us near the roof top parking lot. I'm sure Josh still remembers how to hotwire a car."
"Wait. About the car part, where the hell would we go with an antidote in our hands that has the potential to save the human race, that is if we ever find it! I think hotwiring a car was about all we really got to in our grandmaster plan. And what if we blast open that emergency door to supposed freedom, only to find about half the human population loping around in the mall parking lot? Isn't that always in the movies, although it's usually jam-packed all around the mall and about twice as much where people would usually run to to escape. And didn't you suspect that they might have gathered somewhere. So here's some logic as to just where they might have all decided to congregate. What if they know?" It wasn't that hard to see Joyce nearing her breaking point.
"Nothing ever goes according to plan. We'll just have to wing it. And it's the best we can do. We'll fight off whatever's up there and of course have hundreds of cars to choose from. And we're going to find as much of the antidote as we can. Then dump it into our water supplies, just like our scientist friends most likely did."
"Our water supplies? What the hell for?" Josh asked utterly confused. "In case you didn't notice, those guys are dead already. They don't drink water anymore let alone have a stomach."
"If my theory is correct, and it usually is, if the black substance could affect bodies merely by touching them, then it shouldn't be a problem. With all the water sources containing the antidote, it would erase the effects of the previous substance and then all we need is for them to come into contact with it, which shouldn't be that hard. Luckily, we have all this bottled water to live off of in case it is harder than calculated." I was probably getting a bit cocky by now, but I didn't really care. It made sense, it should work, and if it didn't, at least we would've made a hell of an effort and took a horde of the bastards with us.
"And the best way to do that is..." I paused, suddenly unsure.
"Is...?" Both of them peered at me expectantly.
"My best guess," Josh and I turned our attentions to Joyce. "Is that the Honolulu Board of Water Supplies may provide us with the best answer."
...
That just might work.
