Knee Injury of a Life Time
As surgery draws nearer and nearer, I feel the need to tell my story.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009:

While I was playing basketball, with some random people who were two years older than me, I drove to the basket, down the baseline, attempting to find a weak spot in the defense.

My plan worked, but not exactly the way I wanted it to.

I did a quick hesitation move to try and make the defender believe that I was going to shoot. He jumped towards me and almost landed on me. As a result, I was knocked down hard. On the way down, the side of my right knee hit the pole that was used to support the basketball post.

I don't exactly remember how hard I hit the ground. All I can say is, I felt and heard three bones in my right leg crack. I was thinking fracture.

I decided not to go to the school nurse, because school was almost over and I had to catch the school bus home. It was also the first time this year that my friend would be able to come over to my house.

At the beginning of school that day, when my friend told me he probably could go to my house that day, I just said, "I bet something is going to happen, and then you'll never be able to come to my house. I don't know what it is, just something." At the time, I assumed he'd rather hang out with his ROTC buddies. I was way off.

Anyway, back to my injury. I was lying on the ground grasping at my knee for at least two minutes. The ground was incredibly hot, so I decided to get up. Wrong move. As soon as I got up, my leg shook, and I fell back to the ground, crying. I've never felt pain like that in my life.

I tried getting up again. This time, though, I only tried to get on my butt. Finally, I was successful. I got to a sitting position with ease. I had just realized that my injury had caused the game to stop. I pitied myself, and started shaking my head, thinking to myself. "Why am I always getting injured? On the last week of school too..."

I was able to climb up to my left foot using the rusted, chain-linked fence that was behind me. I tried putting some weight on my right leg, but I ended up wincing in pain. From there, I just hopped along the sides of the court using the same fence to support myself. My teacher had been informed against my orders. I told her I was okay, and I probably just need to stretch it out a little.

Now, I had a good reason to skip class. Even though I left 10 minutes before the bell rang, I had only reached the office, which was on the other side of the school from the locker rooms. I was still far from the bus stop, and my bus just happened to be the first one to arrive that day. My friend, that was coming over, was able to run to the bus to tell the bus driver to wait for me. I can't imagine how stupid I looked has I hopped and limped my way to the bus stop. I won't bother telling you how hard it was getting up the steps on the bus, it just hurt.

Anyway, my friend came over for the first time this school year and I was all happy. A few hours later, my mom came home and I asked her to take me to the hospital. This was my first injury in a while, and it felt bad, so I felt the need to ask what the doctor thought. We went to the Emergency Room, which was as slow as ever, and I got my x-rays. My guess turned out right. It was a small fracture. That night I got my crutches, and giant, blue knee brace.

That's it for that dreadful day. I'll continue the full story in my next entry. Thanks for reading! mrgreen
