TLLF: Chapter 5 Part 1
Dreams
The night came. The night birds hooted in the trees and the air was refreshingly cool. The stars twinkled and played in the black sky and the moon was a sliver of silver. A small fire burned and crackled in a pit of wood and leaves and there was a soft breathing sound that lingered in the air. The blonde was fast asleep with is hand resting on the bare, wooden chest of his partner. His bang was pushed back behind his ear and the rest weaved around the short stocks of fresh grass. Sasori lay beside him. His arm around Deidara’s shoulder and his nose touched that of the blonde. His other hand was entwined with his partners and his chest was agents Deidara’s, with the exception of Deidara’s hand on his chest. He gently rubbed the blonde’s bare back, tracing the muscles and the smooth bumps of his backbone. He looked at the peaceful expression that was carved into his partner’s face. The fire’s glow reflected off Deidara’s blonde hair and face making him look like he was made of gold. Golden… Sasori thought Yes, Deidara is truly golden to me. It’s as if I’ve been willingly captured in his golden glow and his aqua blue eyes. Such beauty I can’t believe I ever failed to notice. Deidara, I wish I could be like you. Life looks so beautiful through your eyes. I wish I was able to enjoy it, before becoming what I am. Sasori stroked Deidara’s bang with his fingers. His eyes were dazed and enchanted. He ran his hand down Deidara’s side, and wrapped it around the blonde’s waist. Sasori smiled a bit and tilted his head to Deidara’s lips kissing his gently. The fire cracked and the sparks flew into the cool air and then cooled into ash that soon flouted down into the fertile ground. Sasori pulled away and leaned his head agents Deidara’s. Deidara didn’t stir, to wake up now would be a total disappointment and he would never get to finish his dream. It was a strange dream. He was standing alone in a grassy field with a strange flock of birds flying around him. The birds were different colors and they left a trail of their color that glittered off their tail. Deidara watched them. They crossed and their color mixed like water. One bird that was of red color departed from the group. Deidara went after it because the bird reminded him of someone he knew. The bird flew into the forest that was a murky green color. Deidara hesitated. He didn’t want to leave the bright field, but he felt like it would be the same without the red bird. He followed. The murky trees dripped in disgusting moss, but the red bird flew through with its red glitter streams flowing and brightening the darkness. Deidara kept flowing. He began to wonder why he felt so strongly for this red bird. It was just like the others but it seemed so much more familiar. The bird entered a darker, thicker part of the forest, but still it flew on. Deidara began to run after it, following the red glow that started to fade the further it went. Deidara called after it, when he did the bird stopped and turned around. It hovered in the air, gently flapping its wings and looking at Deidara with its glowing gray eyes. Deidara ran over to it and was soon standing right in front of it. It looked at him, flapping its wings gently in the still air.
“ Hey there.” Deidara said softly to the bird. The red bird didn’t move. It just kept starring at Deidara in the same no expression. Deidara was still for a moment before holding out his arm. “ Its ok, I’ll take you back to your friends.” He said gently to it again. The bird moved back, its red stream leaving a glowing trickle of glitter off its tail. Its eyes were unsure about Deidara and it continued to move backward slowly. Deidara lowered his arm and slowly moved toward it again. “ It’s ok. I won’t hurt you.” He said gently. The bird came closer and landed on Deidara’s shoulder. It ruffled its feathers and made itself comfortable on Deidara’s shoulder. Deidara smiled and gently stroked the soft red feathers on the bird’s chest. The bird softly screeched, singing its song that filled the air with a soft tune that cut into the darkness of the forest. Deidara smiled and pet the bird again. The bird then flew off of Deidara’s shoulder still singing and went up to a branch. It came back with something in its mouth. It was a scroll that looked just like the ones he and Sasori had been collecting. Deidara gasped in surprise and gently took the scroll from the red bird. After putting it in his pocket, he looked at the bird again that was hovering in front of him. He smiled, but it didn’t last long. Just then something shot through the thick trees. It blazed through and shot the bird in the side of its chest. Deidara’s eyes widened as it fell to the ground. The bird let out a deafening screech and the exploded into red light and glitter as it hit the ground. Deidara’s face was in shock. The arrow that was in the bird was still stuck in something that he couldn’t see through the red smoke. When the smoke finally cleared, Deidara’s eyes widened in horror. There, lying on the dark green ground was his partner Sasori. Something was strange about him; his body wasn’t a puppet. Instead, it was a body of flesh. Deidara knew that Sasori was young when he made himself a puppet, but the look of Sasori’s human body made him look so much younger. He looked just like the Sasori that Deidara knew, but it surprised him to see the true body his partner used to have. Deidara kneeled beside the dead body of his partner. He couldn’t help but stare at the body. Sasori’s chest was a soft flesh color rather then a hard polished surface. His face was also soft but seemed to be paler then his chest. Deidara looked over him with oncoming tears in his eyes. He never knew Sasori looked like this, so young and youthful that no one but him knew the true horrors of his past. How could such misfortunes happen to such a young, handsome boy? Deidara ran his fingers down Sasori’s sixteen-year-old body. The blood ran down the side of Sasori and onto the ground that was starting soaking in the red liquid. Deidara looked at the cursed arrow that had stabbed his lover and pulled it out. No wonder he felt so much for that red bird, it was Sasori. Deidara’s tears fell the more he looked at the young, bleeding, dead body of Sasori. He lifted the body to siting position and held it close to his chest. Deidara cried silently while he stroked the young red head he was holding. It made him think about the whole thing that happened. Sasori had given him the scroll and was shot down. Deidara was still in shock and he kept looking over the body of his partner. He felt so real, so cold, so young and dead. Deidara cried more and he held on tighter to the young redhead. “ S-Sasori…” He stuttered. Sasori made no movement. His hands started to become transparent, then soon disappeared into a red glow. Deidara’s eyes widened as he watched Sasori fade away. His tears became overflowing when Sasori was completely faded. The glow vanished and the forest became darker. Deidara trembled and held his head in his hands. “ S-Sasori… no…Sasori!” Deidara cried. His eyes snapped open. There in front of him was Sasori. The same, wooden puppet he had always known. He was shaking him with a worried and confused expression on his wooden features.
“ Deidara? Are you ok? It was just a nightmare!” Sasori said gently and he stroked Deidara’s cheek gently. Deidara’s breathing slowed down to normal and he looked around. He was back in the forest where he fell asleep. The fire was glowing coals, it was night and Sasori was with him. Everything was the same as it was before. Deidara took in another breath to calm himself. He noticed the tears that streamed down his face and wiped them off. He looked up into Sasori’s worried, gray eyes.
“ Danna, it was terrible…” he breathed. Sasori looked at him and put his arm around him.
“ Tell me about it. What happened?” Sasori said comfortably. Deidara hesitated, but decided it might help if he told Sasori.
“ Well…I was in a field, with a bunch of different colored birds around me. Then the red one flew away. I went after it, to see where it was going and to bring it back. For some reason I felt attached to it.” He started. Deidara looked over at Sasori to see his reaction. He seemed to be listening, so he continued. “ And, when I caught up to it, it sat on my shoulder and started singing. It was such a sweet tune. Then it flew to a branch and…” Deidara stopped. Could the dream have been a message? Deidara reached into his pocket and pulled out the scroll. His eyes widened in surprise. The scroll that Sasori had given him in the dream was right there! Deidara looked at Sasori again and held up the scroll. “ And it gave me this.” He said. Sasori’s eyes widened when he saw the scroll.
“ W-what?!” he said in surprise. He had a dumfounded expression and he starred at Deidara. He calmed down and held the hand that Deidara was using to hold the scroll. “ And what happened after that?” He asked. Deidara looked at Sasori. He felt more comfortable now that Sasori didn’t think he was lieing, so he continued on with the story.
“ Well. After I took it, an arrow came and shot the bird in the side of the chest.” Deidara said. His face turned sad and Sasori rubbed his shoulder tenderly. “ Once it hit the ground, it exploded into a cloud of red smoke. Once the smoke cleared…I…I saw…” Deidara looked up at Sasori with teary eyes. Sasori got the message. Deidara had seen him dead. Sasori held Deidara closer.
“ It’s ok now. You can tell me.” He said as he wiped the tears away from Deidara’s already tear-stained face. Deidara breathed in, then out and continued. ‘ I saw you, but you weren’t like you are now.” Sasori raised his eyebrows. “ Instead, your body was made of flesh. You laid there, dead and pale with the arrow in your side.” Deidara looked at Sasori again. Sasori’s eyes were surprised and sad.
“ You…Saw my human body.” Sasori said. Deidara nodded. Sasori was silent for a moment. “ Deidara, did I look weak to you?” Sasori said softly. Deidara looked at Sasori’s eyes. They looked so ashamed and sad. Sasori must have thought that his human body was weak and frail. Deidara shook his head.
“ No, un. You just looked so young. I couldn’t believe it was you at first. I knew you were sixteen when you made yourself a puppet, but you just looked so young. It made me cry when I thought about how many misfortunes haunted you behind that young, handsome face of yours. Then, when I was holding you, you began to fade away.” Deidara said with tears running down his face again. “ You faded into a red glow and then you were gone. I was alone.” Deidara held onto Sasori tightly. Sasori was in shock. Young? Handsome? He thought. Is Deidara surprised on how young I looked then? Do I look old now? Did he prefer that body to the one I have now? Sasori’s thoughts went back and forth. When he was quiet for a long time, he broke the silence.
“ Deidara. Do I look old to you? Ugly even?” He asked slowly. Deidara eyes widened and he shook his head.
“ No that’s not what I meant.” He said hurriedly “ Its just, I was surprised to see you in a different body. It wasn’t what I was used to. No, I don’t think your old or ugly Sasori, un. I love you, for what you are.” Deidara said. Sasori was quiet. He rubbed Deidara’s back and he took the last scroll form Deidara and put it in the door of his chest.
“ Ok. I’m glad you feel that way. I love you too Deidara.” Sasori said with a small smile. He brushed Deidara’s hair with his fingers and laid them both back down again. Deidara nodded and smiled a bit. He lay close to his Danna again and soon fell into a peaceful, dreamless sleep. Sasori watched him and wrapped his arms around him. The birds continued to sing in the late night breeze and the moon was at its brightest. The stars still played and the sky had become clear. The last of the coals died and left a small whiff of smoke in the air. All was normal again. The five scrolls were safely tucked away, and tomorrow they would start the journey back to the hideout.
