There have been a bunch of news blip type things lately about celebrities posting nude pictures of themselves on the internet lately. Also, if you even just look around Gaia, you'll see a bunch of people posting pictures of themselves. Of course, there are also the sites like Facebook and Myspace, who encourage posting of personal pictures.
Why is it that people post pictures of themselves?
Is it narcissism or insecurity?
A wish to show the truth or a wish to deceive?
Is it all in good fun or is there a deeper purpose?
Posting out of self-love or self-hate?
Posting for praise or criticism?
Proof of identity and existence or yet another mask?

I suppose the reasons vary from person to person.
I generally don't post my pictures in public because A) people don't need to know what I look like B) it allows me some sense of anonymity and C) I'm shy anyway. Even if I did post a picture of myself ~ how would you know it's me? I could just be posting a random person or friend and saying it's me. Also, I really don't care if people think I'm hot or ugly, especially online. I'm not so insecure that I need praise from strangers.
That being said, I suppose it would be kind of fun to post one's picture in a public forum and see other people's pictures. Because on Gaia we can hide behind our avatars, it must kind of be like removing the mask from the other people. A masquerade party where guests can choose whether or not to remove their masks.
Now, about all these celebrities posting nude pictures... and then taking them off and there being talk of legal shiznit. I think it's kind of stupid really. If you're a crap actor/actress then you'll still be crap even if you look hot nude. If you're a good actress/actor then you'll still be just as good with or without clothes. Publicity stunts are kind of dumb, really. But whatever. I guess it could just be one of those spur of the moment things that one regrets later. I could totally see that happening. I still kind of doubt it, though.
