Averill Kenneth Lawrence woke up with a yawn. He stretched out, and shook his head a bit, trying to shake away the sleepiness that still hung about his head and his slender body. He yawned again, the early morning sun's rays shimmering down around him despite his little alcove in a dirty alleyway. He was huddled beside a metal trash can, and even though it smelled really bad, it was a less scary place since it was a small, narrow alleyway that was not as loud and noisy as the main streets of Valenwood. Averill had just arrived in this city of misfits and rejects a few days ago, and still felt lost, hungry, and cold.

Averill shivered and wrapped his scarf tighter around himself, fluffing it up and adjusting it so the scarf covered his chin, particularly the part of his chin that carried the scar. He looked around himself at the alleyway and noticed with a start how disgusting it looked. There was trash and garbage strewn about, and some of the trashcans were knocked down, and some were turned over. It smelled horrible. Averill shivered again, wondering what this day would hold. The last few days since his arrival had been pretty uneventful. Averill staggered his way into this city, and on his way, he was rather lost, but after a while, he finally found it. And then, Averill had to figure out what was going on. The city was so noisy and scary and intimidating. Little Averill had no idea what to do, and so, ended up hiding himself in an alleyway. This Valenwood City did not please Averill much, but he really had no choice; he had nowhere else to go. He was a stray kitten, an unwanted pet. No one wanted him, and so, he had to stay by himself, and be alone for the time-being.

Averill stood up from the spot he was curled up in and leaned against the alleyway wall, closing his eyes for a moment to simply rest and try to see if he was alert enough to walk about. He peeked his head out of the alleyway, and noticed the quietness that was about. It was still too early and most of the activity, Averill figured, would come about later. It was not too noisy at the moment, although some abandoned pets were already up and finding breakfast or wandering about. Some others were sleeping in the streets, napping silently or snoring loudly. Averill decided to walk around a bit, to explore Valenwood a bit more now that it was not too noisy or crowded. There were many buildings about, and Averill wondered what some of them contained. However, he did not feel like entering any of the buildings for fear of them holding dogs or other hostile animals who may not want someone peeking into their property.

Time passed, and Averill was still wandering through Valenwood rather aimlessly. More and more people were awake now, and the streets started to bustle with a lot more activity. The weather was warm, but there was a nice little breeze that made it feel like springtime even though summer was starting. Averill stopped in front of a random building, leaning against it to rest his tired feet. He looked around at the streets and flinched when he heard a loud, raucous yell from someone. He did not like all this noise that was beginning to start and come about. Averill looked up at the sky, and saw that the sun was shining bright, high up in the sky. It is probably around noon... he thought to himself. The sun was shining bright, but there were some rolling clouds in the blue skies above him.

Averill closed his eyes for a moment, starting to feel rather dizzy. His stomach grumbled from hunger and Averill realized, I have not eaten much at all... I haven't actually eaten anything since... well, since coming here... Averill shook his head fiercely, trying to snap himself out of the painful pangs of hunger. Earlier, when he tried to get some food, someone else stole it from him, and Averill realized what a harsh place Valenwood was.

Averill forced himself to smile, and he tried to find something positive. He thought hard for a moment, and decided that everything could be a lot worse. He was not sick, he was not injured; he was just hungry. That was all, and he figured he would survive just find. He slumped against the wall, still feeling tired even though his mood was not that sad anymore. Averill soon slumped down so that he was sitting on the ground, leaning back against the wall. He hoped that whoever lived or resided in that building did not mind him just sitting there. The noise and bustle of the city was giving a horrible headache, and Averill was feeling dizzier by the minute. I hope no one minds that I am just sitting here in front of their building... Oh, why do I feel so dizzy and faint...?
