Sail Away Home

I was ten years old when I heard my first rock song. A soft harmonica pitched through the beached catacombs as I sanded a boat held up on rotting horses. A rusty, red chevy jumbled its way over the beaten road, the driver listened to the Brew as Bruce began those famous words;

“The screen door slams,
Mary’s dress waves...”

After weeks of nonstop preparation, my mechanicality waned as my arms slacked limply by their rightful sides. I thought I had known what determination was when finding the yellowed rowboat moored in an overgrown swamp months ago. I thought I had it when I rowed the thing out to shore and, when it began to sink, swam the boat to the beach and dragged it the rest of the way into the weedy field. I would’ve thought I planned to leave when the thing could float, since I knew I was leaving already.

But. I. Can’t. Go.

I wouldn’t stand a chance out there on those two lanes that’ll take me anywhere.

“We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back
Heaven’s waiting on down the tracks
Oh-oh come take my hand
Riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh-oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road
Oh Thunder Road....”

The road will destroy me before I even get the chance to live.

Die now, live later.

I dropped my tools and stared at the nameless boat. I pushed it off the supports and let it crash and split itself open like my heart.

Another time then...
