Capt. Deep and the commodore glared into each others eyes, silently speaking their hatred for one another.
Chills crawled up and down Will’s spine as he crept towards the closet in Capt. Deep’s room, trying to be as silent as possible. He knew how well the navy was trained, and if they heard the slightest movement downstairs they would surely check it out.
He turned the handle on the closet to open it and hide, and as he pulled the door out towards him, swords fell in all directions around him.
He thought he heard footsteps on the stairs, and he knew this was it – someone would find him and he would be found out. He covered his eyes with his arms, and he crouched down slightly. Then he saw the swords around him and he noticed extra clothes in the closet.
There was an eye patch, a long black jacket, and there was enough dirt on the bottom of his boots that he could use to cover up anything on his face or hands that someone could recognize him with. He quickly covered himself, and then two naval men came thundering in.
“We’ve got you now you dirty rotten pirate!” The taller one said.
The other one was shorter, but not much. He also had glasses. “We’re going to throw you in the brig, and then we’ll give you a short drop and a sudden stop!”
Will opened his mouth to speak, but he couldn’t let them recognize his voice. He cleared his throat and said “Well then boys I guess that means you’ll want to catch me then?”
“Aye, we want to catch you, and it looks like we did!” The taller one said, holding up his gun and aiming for Will.
Will wasn’t too familiar with conflict such as this, and he was trying to improvise without blowing his cover and he masked his nervousness well. “But things are not always as they appear. And it appears that your gun has the safety on.”
“What?” The taller man with the gun asked, looking over his gun. In that moment of weakness, Will darted past the two and thundered up the stairs.
“The safety wasn’t on!” The tall man complained.
“He did say things weren’t always as they appeared.” The shorter man pointed out.
“So we’ve been tricked then, have we?” The taller man clarified.
“Yeah. Scammed, bamboozled, cheated, lied to-” The shorter one elaborated.
“I get it already!” The taller one glared down at the shorter man.
“Well sorry, I was just answering your question!” The shorter one snapped.
“It was a rhetorical question!” The taller one growled.
The shorter one glared back up at the other one, and then turned sharply to see where Will had darted off to.
Will was battling with another naval man, and Capt. Deep was fighting with the commodore. She was up at the wheel, when she looked down. The first thing she noticed was Will out of the safety of her room, or any place safe from the commodore. Then she noticed how he had disguised himself and he didn’t look too much like the regular Will. But Capt. Deep could still tell who he was, and the commodore would also, after twenty-two years of living with him.
Capt. Deep had to keep the commodore away from him, and yet she had to get Will back o safety. But she couldn’t do both, not easily anyway.
She bit her lip, and then lunged for the commodore. The two fought with determination, and then Capt. Deep came up with a possible solution; she could just kill the commodore, and then there would be no more conflict as far as that issue went.
But then Will would be upset, and she couldn’t do that to him. She held him down with her knee and held her sword over his throat. His swords were out of his reach, and he obviously had no where else to go. “Well what are you waiting for?” The commodore snapped, tears beginning t form in the corners of his eyes. “Kill me already! It’s what you’ve wanted to do since the day I first hunted you down!”
Capt. Deep remembered that day three years ago. She was sailing through the straight between England and Ireland, with a bag of stolen treasure in her hand. There was a sudden thump on deck. The crew rushed out on deck and they met the commodore for the first time. Capt. Deep had defeated him, and the next time he attacked he defeated her. It seemed the score was always tied between them.
She could end that right then, and she could win – once and for all. But she thought back to almost a year ago, seeing Will in the streets of Britain, and she had followed him to his home, and watched him.
Not wanting Will’s pirate life to be chosen in vain, she merely snapped. “Count your blessings, because I have a decent reason to keep you alive. But I have no reason to keep you on board my ship.”
The commodore looked a bit confused, and then he understood. Capt. Deep sent him careening over the edge of the ship and into the water. The naval men followed him and retrieved him. Seeing they were defeated, they backed away and were lost to the horizon.
