Anime and Manga are forms of Art.
[color=white]Dictionary.com 1. the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.
That is the dictionary.com's definition for the definition of art.
Manga/Anime style may not appeal to some of you, which is understandable, but there is a large amount of people whom it does appeal to. It's not just me, either. I have drawn fanart of certain characters in one of my experimental Manga styles, and a girl in my school, who saw him, said he was hot. She was not an Anime or Manga fan.
A Mangaka is a Manga artist. An artist is one who makes art. It's that simple.
For those of you who say Manga has no variety, well, you're wrong. The style varies with each artist. Below are examples from popular Manga:

Each Mangaka has his or her own style that differs from another's. And if you can't tell the difference, you need to see an eye doctor.. Of course, they have their similarities, as they are in the same general style called Manga.
Realism is one of the best accepted art forms. And it also happens to be my second-favorite form of art. Yet, it's far more repetitious than Manga as everything has to be exactly the same as the object drawn, whereas in Manga it allows room to expand and freely stylize. No I am not bashing realism. It's the only thing I can draw aside from Anime.
Modern art is simply not my thing nor do I appreciate it nearly as much as Realism or Anime. Yet it's far more widely accepted as art than Anime and Manga. It could be that it's around longer, and it's certainly revolves around personal taste. And personally, I find Manga/Anime far more appealing than abstract.
Anime/Manga does not hinder your progress on Realism. To be a good Manga artist, you have to understand the human anatomy and proportions to begin with. Without it, it would look like the crap I was drawing two years ago.
