In most futuristic societies, or even paradies of future societies, the world has become one country. There are no wars, there's one government, and there's peace.
I have a problem with these societies. Everyone these days is always striving for peace, for a world without war. And while I am not promoting bloodshed, we have to look at the reasons for war.
Early on, and still today, wars are fought over religion and beliefs. Other wars have been generally fought over disagreements. This is the basis of my whole opinion. If wars stop, that means that the world has stopped disagreeing. Opinions would cease to matter since no one would listen. The government would have total control over everything since there would be no other country to keep it in check. We would stop evolving because human development, as far as intelligence, has depended on disagreements and the fact that you could leave where you lived and move to a place where you shared beliefs with others. In a one world government, there would be no where to run to.
Look at how people fled to the New World for religious freedom and how we eventually warred for independence. This led to the development of rights for a democratic nation. Look at the cival war and how it led to rights for people of all races. During WWII, we learned the horrors of genocide and took preventative measures to keep such a thing from happening again.
We technologically advanced during times of war. Even in early civilization, mental development was determined by how advanced the weaponry was for a given tribe or race of people. Humans learned to forge metals from war. The industrial revolution was spurred on by WWI, leading to the development of mass productioned goods and inventions. We made ariplanes more efficent and commerical, improved communication techniques (what do you think phones were first developed for?)
While not all our advancements have been beneficial (bombs, guns, poison gases, tanks) Times of war are critical for developments in society. Arguments, disagreements, while some are trivial, are vital. Of course I want to smack some idiot over the head every once in a while for their opinion, but i'm also greatful for it, because if we all had the same opinion, life would just be boring.
More and more, we hear of developments in brain power and how we can control our moods and make ourselves have a god day. If we focus on the good things, then the bad will simply disapear. I think this development could be either extremely beneficial to society, or completly detrimental.
Stupid events that happen to us during the day (such as not being able to find your favorite shirt to wear) certainly shouldn't put you in a bad mood and it especially does not give anyone a reason to be a b***h. But for the bigger things, if something bad happens, you shouldn't just "focus ont he good so it'll go away". That's not how humanity works. You hear it a lot in quantum physics, the whole 'thin positve thoughts', but there are still kinks to work out, in my mind.
Seriously, no one should lose their mom and be perfectly fine with it. If they are as a result of this type of thinking, something has gone terribly wrong. If you don't know what 'bad' is, then you cannot possibly know what 'good' is. Meaning, you can't appreciate what is a positive event in your life if you have not experienced a negative one. I mean, if you stare at a blank white sheet of paper all your life, you won't know it's white until you're told so, and then shown a piece of black paper to compare. If this quantum physiscs thinking prevails, society is just going to be numned from any real feeling.
This sort of wound up as two entries in one, but they kind of go together.
