Summary: Yako wants to believe that nothing changed, but she should have known better.
When Neuro left, it was as if he never came.
Godai disappeared, and after Akane stopped moving, Yako closed the detective office and declared her withdrawal from investigations. Some say she was too grieved at the disappearance of her assistant, but Yako knew better.
Without Neuro, the detective office had no reason to exist. Without Neuro, she had no reason to be a detective. She didn’t have to squeeze her meager brainpower nor risk her life just to feed the insatiable demon.
Because now Neuro is satisfied, and he has gone.
Yako graduated high school without further mishaps. The Tokyo Metro Police Department offered to sponsor her studies in Criminology, but Yako politely declined. She had had enough of criminals. She had enough of conspiracy and media coverage. All she wanted was so slowly disappear from the public eye, like smoke.
And she got her wish. Six months after she graduated, the High School Female Detective ceased to appear in the media. And until her mother mentioned it, Yako did not realize that something else had disappeared –
Her appetite.
“Just one bowl of katsudon, Yako!?” Maria looked on in astonishment at her longtime friend. “Are you ill or something?”
“Why does everyone think something’s wrong with me?” Yako scowled playfully. “Aren’t you supposed to rejoice that I’m not such a glutton anymore?”
Rejoice, Yako, for I have created stairs.
“Well considering the amount you used to eat, this is a pittance.” Maria sighed. “Maybe you grew up?”
Hurry up and evolve, Yako.
“There you go again, treating me like a child.” Yako huffed and checked her watch. “Oh crap, I’m going to be late for class!” She squeaked and dove for her bag. Maria stirred her latte with interest. “What are you studying now, criminology?”
“No such thing! I’m going to be a teacher!” Yako beamed and hurriedly left the money for her meal on the table. “We’ll meet up some other time okay, Maria? Gotta go!” She rushed towards the entrance and heard Maria laughingly call after her; “Alright, but don’t you dare forget!”
Do not forget Yako. Do not ever forget. My teasing, my torture, the tears you shed for Aya and HAL – never forget.
“Idiot.” Yako muttered, feeling her chest constrict and tears well up as she ran towards the university. “Neuro you idiot. How can I ever forget?”
