Memento Mori

Freewrite - Focusing The Essay
[[This is a partial continuation of my writing. I am now going to structure what I have loosely. The quote is after filtration of the crap. Edit: This freewrite is now officially a freewrite/rapidwrite since I got writer's block nearing the bottom. &.&]]

I enjoy writing fiction most of all simply because there are no rules except for the ones you make. Like Koffi Agba, a student, once said, "Writing gives you a god-like power." This statement rings true when one writes fiction; the writer breathes life into the characters and takes it away, the writer can alter the landscape and change the weather, and the writer can even change the flow of time. Writing fiction embodies all of these characteristics and acts a creative sponge, focusing all of one's talent into words on a paper. If one is truly great, one could make a story so vivid and extraordinary that the characters touch the reader. I aspire to write something like that most of all.

In a way, roleplaying is a branch of writing fiction and taking the place of the character you write about. I enjoy a story where a character grows and changes logically in response to external stimuli. In fact, I roleplay to bring about a character that will grow in such a way. I've played through many character types in order to get a feel for what a character could possibly be thinking in my fiction: tough guy, manipulative b*****d, religious fanatic, a lobotomized man, overly emotional mother, pervert, and a whole lot of others. Some characters remain static while some characters change; it's mainly dependant on the roleplay. Does a character have reason to change? Is the character adamant about his belief and, if so, how much will he sacrifice to keep his belief? Sometimes, roleplaying can be very enjoyable if you have a person who responds timely on the forums; it could also be aggravating with people god-modding, completely illiterate to the point of being incomprhensible, or taking a week or two to post a reply. Most of the times, it is enjoyable which is why I continue to roleplay.

However, writing fiction is not the only thing that I enjoy. Sometimes, I enjoy essays that I needed to write in class; those essays though usually involve ethics or science. I have a habit of pondering moral relativity because I know the world is not black and white, only shades of grey. What would you consider a valid reason for murder? To steal? To lie? You might consider all of them abominable acts, but you also understand that people do such things everyday and that people do not [see the same views as you do]. The liminality between good and evil is something I like to examine on a regular basis which is why I enjoy writing about ethics. The second thing I enjoy writing about is science. Why? Because I'm interested in the topic. I enjoy writing about my opinions on a scientific field or researching to gain better understanding of what I write. Science and medicine are my true callings, and writing is a vehicle to deliver both my understanding and opinions to other people.

Now, [away from things I like writing and to things I dislike writing about.] I harbor a deep-seated hatred for literary interpretation; though I know there is some use for the subject, I have never liked the subject at all. The subject usually brings back bad memories of struggling to find something to write about before handing it in and getting a note back stating that I cannot use those examples to justify what I wrote. Considering that I felt that it did justify what I wrote, I can't see why it does not; it is my total belief that most teachers, when it comes to literary interpretation, want you to write what they see and, if you don't, will dock you points for not seeing their point of view. My reasons for disliking the subject immensely may not be the best-seated, but it's what I feel.

Of course, one of the cornerstones of writing is grammar, a cornerstone that I fare quite well at carrying. I'm fairly proficient with commas and semicolons, though I admittedly make the occasional mistake in their usage. However, I'm not too proficient with the usage of colons; yes, I do know that they precede a list, but I just recently learned that they can be used before a quote or a saying. I'm usually good with pronoun agreement, but I occasionally make errors with associating an introductory clause with its correct subject right afterwards. I can make complex sentences pretty well too.

Professor Benson once said something along the lines of “If you envision your linguistic competence as a circle, you tend to use things on the peripheries of that circle.” I guess the peripheries of my-

-------------

********. Writer's block once more. -_-. I'm going to power through it again with a rapidwrite. I will direct the focus on my writing process and try to keep it there. Now...STARt

Currently, I believe that the writing process I currently use is effective at writing essays that are not based on literary interpretation. OF course, everything I do involving literary interpretation is crap and therefore it is purposeless to say that my [creation] based of literary interpretation is a reflection of my writing process's failings. Bleh bleh bleh. &_& God. I have a mild brain ache. XD. Anyways...back to the subject at hand.

My writing process directly involves a computer. Yes, a computer. I hate hand-writing notes (though it is admittedly good at keeping the information in your head.) and hand-writing an essay. For one, it is a lot easier for me to type on the computer and I do not need to worry about "writing in the lines". On top of that, writing on a computer is much faster and I can pretty much type without looing at the screen or the keyboard; in fact, I am doing that right now to prove this to myself. Heh heh. Bleh, I will now consciouslly remove XDs from my writing whne I imagine it XD. Err...Crap. &_& Anyways, that is pretty much my sole prerequesite when I'm typing up an essay or a freewrite. I need a computer; otherwise, I fail.

Now, my writing process starts out with a freewrite. And I do mean freewrite; this is actually one of the first times that I am using a rapidwrite to help me write an essay. Heh heh. I prefer stability in my writing which is why I am more willing to use a freewrite than a rapidwrite, but it seems that rapidwriting helps me get ALL the information that is currently in my head down. &.&. The only problem is that it also ends up with a lot of crap. Remember the rapid write in the previous journal? It was nine pages. 4 pages was full of inane crap...and that was not including the inane crap between blocks of information. XD. God, I'm amazing at producing crap....but that is officially besides the point. After rapidwriting, I try to focus using a freewrite and try to piece all the information that is RELEVANT to the essay together in the essay. I would like to note that I do not have the rapidwrite in front of me, but I will occasionally reference it if I need to be reminded of what I wrote. According to the professor, this is the best way to keep the flow in our writing and rewriting, and, quite frankly, I agree entirely. My free-writing stage can be considered a focusing and structuring stage being done at the same time.

Now, I have recently learned that YOU DO NOT NEED A THESIS STATEMENT when it comes to opinionated or literary interpretative writing; it helps, but it is not necessary. I find it easier to lead your reader into things...instead of saying, "this is what I am going to write". And yes, I am one of those people who uses "saying" when in terms of writing. Deal with it. Heh heh. Nowadays, I constantly try to flow into my writing and I find it extremely effective. I sort of copied the style of writing from The Fly in the Ointment and it works wonderfully. Nowadays, my writing sounds like I'm speaking the damn thing (which is impossible because my verbal eloquence is shite) and I find that wonderful. xD. My experience with thesis statements is poor because a thesis statement really does not leave anything to the imagination nor is it actually thought provoking. I prefer my introduction to have a transition between itself and the first body paragraph.

Oh. I just realized from this rapidwrite...heh heh. I am weak at writing concluding paragraphs. ^___^. See, rapidwriting actually does help. Heh heh. xD. I should add that to my list of my linguistic incompetences. I usually write the conclusion at the very end of me writing all my body paragraphs, and I sort of link them up all in a way like a thesis statement being tagged along the butt end of the essay. XD. However, conclusions should say something new and insightful in my honest opinion and I try hard to do so...and fail miserably. -____-. However, it is my hope that more and more practice will allow me to do this better and better.

Now, when I start correcting my errors, I used to just stare at the computer and wait for the errors to come to me. This is wrong and EXTREMELY inefficient. Instead, I should just print the damn thing out (though I'm afraid my dad will see it and point all the things grammatically wrong with it -__-. And he's good at doing that and sometimes a lot of the errors he points out are "stylistic" errors.) and just take a red pen and correct myself. Though it is hard to murder my paper and make it bleed red ink, it's a necessary evil when it comes to writing especially when the latter (being that you FAIL for too many errors) is horrible, so I nowadays try to print my papers out when I have the "finished" product, heh heh. &_&. Hmm....what should I talk about now? I talked about freewriting -& structuring -& correcting..OH!

I have failed to talk about restructuring my essay. Sometimes, I just find a huge pile of crap in the essay that shouldn't belong there. It's not relevant. It's not useful. And it takes away from the value of my essay. So, I get rid of it. I have been getting VERY GOOD at getting rid of irrelevant passages over the years (unless it's literary interpretation but screw it) and I have no fear about taking highlighting a page of my essay and GOING "LOLZ DELETE." Speaking of deletions, I make sure to save in many versions. Sometimes, I end up having 17 versions (minor edits though) of an essay to go through. &.&. It's useful when I want to get information that I deleted (which I found a new purpose for) and placing it back into the essay, but that's rare. When I delete something in the late essay, I am usually sure it has NO point whatsoever in the essay. Instead, I write multiple versions to prevent accusations of plagarism. Yes, plagarism. No one likes it when they are accused of the act, so it is important for me and for you and for a non-cheating population to save multiple versions so that if a coincidence occurs, people can see your essay evolve from mindless crap (my rapidwrite) to less mindless crap (my freewrite) to the finished glorious beautiful wonderful happy piece (my aspiration for my mindless crap). Heh heh. By the way, I don't use crap in terms of "I hate this thing. It sucks;" I use it simply like one would use the word "stuff". Generic word encompassing all for the win.

Anyways, I think I will focus on my thoughts about both rapidwriting and freewriting as inspired by my OoC mates "T3H_FLYSWATT" and "cycle recycle". Yes, this is a thought that happens maybe thirty minutes after I started writing this passage, but I think it's important to my personal writing process on how I do these things. When it comes to freewriting which is my preferred focusing pre-write in the first place, I try to filter out crap that comes onto the page. I have a determined focus in mind and I actively try to filter crap out; as a result, my freewrites are a lot slower but usually more grammar-correct because this slowness allows my grammar-check part of my mind to correct things. I almost always freewrite for everything until I decided to just let go for this essay alone. Rapidwriting is amazing; I keep making connections to things that I probably would have never done if I simply stuck to freewriting. Since I'm writing without abandon, taking every single thought in my head and writing in down unless I realize that I'm going off topic (remember, that I am not consciouslly filtering the garbage of my mind out), I go through my mental storage a lot more quicker than usual and as a result I pull out new ideas that I would have never thought of before. It's...amazing...and surprisingly draining. The first time I did that, my hands started to hurt and my mind started to feel this odd pressure that I associate with mental strain and pressure. It's something I never feel when freewriting. It's this odd pressure in the middle of my forehead that I sometimes get when I'm breathing in and out deeply. &_&. Anyways, I'm having it now, so I will quit this rapidwrite for the moment. &_&.

I think that this was quite useful at geting my thoughts about my writing process out since I never actually thought about it; usually, I just do without thinking; which is sometimes an awesome way of doing things, but it is not a terribly efficient one. Of course, this is not a terribly efficient way of doing things since I will be deleting 40-50% of my rapidwrite, but the thoughts are rather inventive and unique and I amexpecting to have an uber long paper lololololololololol. XD. Yes, I wrote an XD. I noticed. &_&

-sigh- Guess I'm not ending this rapidwrite as of this moment. -___-. Yes. I am. Ending it now. &_&

The time started was [11:00 am] I end at [1:10 pm]. Note that I did this freewrite/rapidwrite combo with interruptions. I did not write non-stop and I occasionally partook in something else (like replying in a certain OOC involving a overly perverted Takeo and a psychedelic user named Greg. &_& wink
----------------------------
[[For later. More freewriting. This time, it's focusing and I might dabble in the Persona story for a bit to keep my interest. Time of free write start: 10:30 pm]]

My experiences involving the writing process have told me that I need time in order to write well and a computer. Though many people can understand the need for time in order to write a brand-spanking new essay, not many people can understand my absolute essential need for a computer when writing. It's quite simple actually; typing on a computer is more efficient than writing on a piece of paper. How? For one, I have a significantly higher word-per-minute when typing than writing and, on top of that, I have no need to focus on whether I am writing between the lines when I'm typing. These two things make my rapidwriting a lot easier since I can quite literally place my thoughts unchanged on a page where hand-writing a rapidwrite might cause me to lose a couple thoughts here and there. On top of that, using a computer allows one to make edits a lot easier than if one were to hand-write it; that and it saves lots of paper, eco-friendly and all that jazz. If possible, I will use a computer throughout the entire of the writing process.

Now that I got my prerequisties out of the way, I might talk about time later. I usually start out an essay or a creative piece with a freewrite/rapidwrite. To me, both of them are different things. Freewriting involves some level of filtering when I'm placing my words down on a page; completely random things such as the ponderings of the history of a sandwich are noticed and are not placed into the writing itself. However, rapidwriting is, quite literally, putting every single thought I have down onto the page, and I constantly have to shift the topic back to its normal course when I notice that I am digressing. Freewriting usually ends up nicer both grammar-wise and thought-wise, but rapidwriting gives me ideas that I never would've picked up in a free-write. If I were to put it in an analogy, freewriting is like a cornstalk where it simply grows straight up, a representation of the level of focus needed, while rapidwriting is like a chrysanttenum bush where all the branches and leaves are all the thoughts that I have. Both of them have specific uses for me; I tend to rapidwrite before freewriting to make sure that I have a lot of essay topics down before getting to the organization and structuring part. In essence, I pretty much do my pre-writing, organizing, and structuring in these two steps.

Afterwards, I go onto the "Re-" stage where I rewrite, restructure, and revise my creation. Most of the time, I end up writing various revisions for my essay.

-------------------------------

Meh, I think I might need to do a "rapidwrite for the 're' stages" of my writing. However, I want to do a rapidwrite of the first chapter of "Persona 3: The Hospital Drama" (Name will be changed since I am copying it off another title. XD. I honestly think I can do it better! Rawr!)

I want to do it in this order:

1. Minato describing the path to his new home. This will be written from third-person limited perspective. He's currently in a paddy-wagon being taken to Tatyumi [I NEED TO FIND THE ACTUAL NAME] Memorial Hospital, and he is staring outside through the window watching the world past. He ends up seeing the Moonlight bridge without realizing what it was (though he feels an odd pang in his heart) and he also passes the dorms where Yukari and Junpei live with Akihiko and Mitsuru. (I am still currently pondering where Minato is going to live after a while. I'm tempted to keep him at the hospital, but then it'll be impossible to have those interesting conversations. XD)

2. Minato finally enters the hospital with the prompting of his "caretakers" and notices Pharos (who the receptionist thought it was cute that Pharos offered to do her job to try it) and gives him the red contract which states the basics. Pharos runs off with the contract though and leaves the receptionist chasing after him. The nurses will have humor on their faces.

3. Through the path of moving from place to place within the hospital, he spots Chidori (not actually named and currently being forced to take a knife away from her), hears Takaya (SALVATION FROM NYX. NYXX SALVATION. AIIIIIIIIIEEEE -electric shocked), and spots a yellow scarf before disappearing. He finally arrives at the front desk of the hospital warden, Igor, who ends up having the contract in his hands. Elizabeth will be in the background, talking to Pharos who is still grinning happily. When Igor points to Elizabeth, she does her "Pleased to make your acquaintence routine" before talking to Pharos again about the merits of not stealing people's things.

4. ????

5. Profit.

6. Just kidding. Let's write that 4) again. <_< Sorry for the 4chan reference. I couldn't help myself. >_<. At least, I got it out of the way. Anyways, I'm not sure what day I am going to name it. >_>. I think I should name it like the start of the game. Oh. Ms. Toriumi will be awesome. XD. I will like to note that. Minato spots Aigis along the way of Elizabeth escorting him to his room, and Aigis, from her own room, continues to simply stare at him before he leaves the view of her window. OMG.

Metis is going to be Aigis's adoptive sister. >_> Nahhh. Never mind that idea. I feel the mental pressure building again. So...I shall continue this more.

7. XD. Cuteness. Minato, late at night, hears knocking on the door and moves to answer it but finds no one there. Heh heh, Pharos. XD. Go Pharos. Minato will eventually catch him though. ^___^.

8. This story will be mainly plotless. >_>. Heh heh. XD.

---------------------

I think I can go back to my freewrite. -checks the rapidwrite earlier-

Hmm...I think I will rapidwrite about my re-writing process. >_>

Now, as I draw these thoughts out of my head and feeling as though a gap is increasing in the left side of my brain (either that or I'm having a seizure without knowing it), I would like to point out my re-writing process. I think I will talk about restructuring first where I either reorder the essay together, bring more stuff inside, or remove stuff from the essay. Now, I believe that I am quite good at the restructuring process...at least, I'm decent at the former and the latter. I am good at organizing my essay to logical blocks (as long as it's not literary interpretation...oh god...I hate literary interpretation with a deep searing block in my heart.) and I'm also very good at removing stuff from my essay. The only problem is that I tend to write less than I have (though it's not going to be any problem with this essay since I have more than 10 pages of raw material filtered.) and I have a harder time incorporating new stuff into my essay. I have a good eye of what doesn't belong in my essay which makes removing stuff so easy for me. However, when it comes to adding stuff, it disturbs me quite a bit because I feel that it ruins the structure of my essay when I do it. The solution, though I have a habit of not using it, is rapidwriting it all together. ^__^. XD. and power it through.

I'm currently powering through the re-section with lots of rapidwriting spam and I seem to be on a rather logical path right now. Heh heh. I'm also waiting for my rp post to be responded to...-cough-. Anyways, I digress again. XD. HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA. XD. HAHAHA. Anyways, laughter needed to come out in writing. On top of that, when it comes to revision, I tend to make many versions of the same paper. Foremost, I'm afraid of being accused of plagairism, so I constantly save new versions and save them for the time where I can go "IN YOUR FACE" to the teacher who decided to bring the case against me. And then I'll place blocks and blocks of revisions in front of him and then get the not guilty verdict. It's a bit hard to find someone guilty of plagarism when he has 19 versions of the paper showing every step he took in the way of writing it. In fact, I'm even saving revisions of my freewrites. =P. On the topic of revising, I have said before that the majority of the finer points of grammar (usage of introductory clauses, semicolons, comma usage) are closer to the center of my linguistic comptentece circle, so I can usually catch most mistakes. It's the ones that are a bit further way from that circle that I make mistakes on. >_>. Oh well, it happens. I try.

I would like to bring up a point that I find hypocritical of the English writing/teaching process. Nowadays, people are constantly being given poor grades for faults in English. If what Professor Benson says is true, shouldn't people be graded based on their improvements in English and their linguistic competence circle? Instead of grading all essays equally, shouldn't each essay be weighted based on the time they are given? Improvement should be reflected when writing. >_>. Sorry, that was inane and I forgot the rest of my argument; I think I should write more and more about it as another journal entry, but I will forgo this for now. My headache is slightly increasing, but I am fine. I don't think I can do this rapidwrite any further. My mind is becoming a bit more sluggish...either that or it's a mind over matter thing. >_>

So...I will direct my focus to something more creative.....THE DRAMA OF HOSPITAL.

------------------

LOL. I just checked my "Well" word file which I use to post Kishimoto rp. I'm not letting anyone look at it by the way. DX. Heh heh heh. >_>. It's 10 pages and nearly 10000 words (since it's around 8.5 font. XD. It lists the main interactions of Murasaki Hizawa, my lobotomized character. XD). Anyways, I just found it funny and I had to point it out....now...I'm going to make a complete rapidwrite of what I should do for the first day of Gekkoukan. I'm a bit tired...so it might not be cmopletely or mentally legible, but that's life. Heh heh. XD.

NOW! I'm sure that Minato will end up taking the train to Gekkoukan under an escort; that escort will be Yukari Takeba who also has to take Fuuka Yamagishi to school as well. Minato sees Shinji with a kid dressed in neon green, but that experience will be fleeting. Fuuka Yamagishi will be very very timid (the way I think Hinata from Naruto is in the earlier stages of the story) and rarely talks. Takeba tries to cheer both of them up, but Fuuka is simply agreeing like a mindless sycophant and Minato is spacing out. (remember, minato has minor apathy syndrome). During the train ride, Minato describes some of the people arou-..

Hmm...now I'm thinking that the 2nd chpater should be Takeba-centric. XD. That would be cool. After Takeba sees the two and asks for Minato's name, she gives her Fuuka's name who nervously waves and stares downward. Fuuka has already had her mental breakdown. >_>. Takeba deposits the two in school and advises both to not talk about their placement in Tatyumi Hospital. Err...maybe I won't write it to be Minato-centric or Takeba-centric. God...this will be odd and confusing. It will be Minato-centric, but I want to write something about the hospital too...which might be Ryoji-centric where Ryoji is going to go off again for business. >_>. A sweet Pharos and Ryoji moment. =D. Cuteness. >_> Pharos = cute....he's psycho but cute. XD. THE END! Personally, I think Pharos drives Takaya off the wall with his comments about the End. XD. Soo...anyways, Minato meets Junpei. XD.And I can't think anymore about this. My fingers are getting tired...

Hmm...now I'm thinking about the Naruto fanfiction I was writing....

------------

Hmm...I'm tempted to make Naruto claustrophobic after his encounter with the "second world" created by the Kyuubi. I think I will focus on the older Naruto in the next chapter and his experience with the Kyuubi seal...Heh heh heh. XD. Time will pass until it returns to the genin exams where Naruto...again fails...

OMG. I just have a new plot thingy. XD. Naruto pushes Iruka out of the way as a result of the leaking memories and ends up getting impaled by the shuriken...as a result, Naruto's super healing goes into overdrive. Oh, by the way, I think I should reference a dream sequence every now and then when Naruto goes asleep. Nightmares or peaceful things of family, I might include a motherly Tsunade and some nightmares about the end of days. >_>. Anyways, Naruto gets impaled and the older Naruto forces the uber chakra to heal Naruto.

Older Naruto and Kyuubi will enter into a battle via flashback. >_>. Or some sort of dialectic.

The older Naruto's voice is heard when he tells Naruto to use what he used, "The uber chakra". OMG. Older Naruto realizes soon that his memories are fading and entering into the younger Naruto. I'm tempted to say when he either loses a key move such as the Rasengan, Tajuu Kage Bushin no Jutsu, or losing bits and pieces of his fighting style. The older Naruto will vanish from Naruto's mind, leaving Naruto to unlock what he had left. Heh heh. Fusion seals are awesome.

Anyways, back to the battle, Naruto, on the cue of the older, uses Tajuu Kage Bunshin no jutsu and kicks Mizuki's a**. They both see the hokage and they talk about the strange chakra healing he had. Hokage tells him about the nine-tailed fox and says nothing further on the subject. Heh heh. Iruka gives him the hiatte. wow, been a long time since i worked on this sotry, XD. Now what comes afterwards. I want to keep the original Team 7, except I'm going to make the abuse of the other three more obvious. Kakashi is an a** who doesn't teach Naruto anything or Sakura. I like making a*****e!Kakashi, a*****e!Sakura, and a*****e!Sasuke. Though two of the three are definite jerks, Kakashi is more subtle at being a jerk. >_>. The older Naruto suggests to get private lessons from Gai...who is interesting. XD. Hm....my mind is warm, no more pressure. XD.

Anyways, Gai and Lee are probably the most morally-awesome characters in the story and that says a lot since everyone else are ninja and try to kill each other. I will try to have Ichiraku scenes...and I'm making the story Naru/Hina. XD. Cause it's cute. It's going to be slow though since I'm poor at writing romance and I don't use beta readers except for my eyes. So...meh. xD. This will be a new fun experience, but I will keep the Persona 3 thing also to the forefront of my mind. biggrin biggrin biggrin . I'm also showing my teeth when I'm making the face on the computer. >_> in real life. XD.

Anyways. It's been an hour since I've started typing and my mind is turning pressure again. XD. Now...I shall return back to writing normally. Freewriting time.

-------------

When it comes to structuring an essay though, I try to make the entire thing flow into one another. In other words, I don't usually write a thesis statement (or rather I haven't been writing them recently). On second thought, I think I have a pretty strong rapidwrite of that statement I wrote about the thesis and I shouldn't need to write it again. On that note, I think I will finish this rapidwrite for the evening. The time is 11:35 pm. razz
