My head was throbbing when I woke up, and my right shoulder and neck were sore, but surprisingly my back felt almost completely healed. I stretched and my head stopped throbbing as I closed my eyes briefly and breathed in before launching myself off the low lying mat. There was a hastily scribbled note in the dirt patch and I barely made it out to be, "You can go where you please, just get back by tonight, the vampires want to have counsel with you. -Darius"
I rolled my eyes, those old crippled blood sucking hags could kiss my a**. I trained with their asinine teachers and obeyed their every rule, and I didn't even have to! I could be on the other side of this stupid war, but noooo they NEEDED me. Bull s**t. If they needed me so much then everyone would tolerate my presence, but no, half of their population thinks I'm a traitor and wants to kill me.
I started to run at an even pace into the woods, somehow my body always lead me there, it was the peaceful solitude of the large trees encompassing and shielding me from the sunlight and in essence the world, that attracted me so much...
Why did Jasper attack me? I remembered our fight, his tension, and Aleyn's and Cecily's warnings, but... he wouldn't have had so much hatred.. I just didn't understand. There were pieces to the puzzle of a vampire that I wasn't being allotted... like Darius's and Jasper's connection. How did that work anyways... and to what extent?
I shook my head and spotted an enormous dead tree stump that I had unknowingly ended up in front of and sat down on it. My head found rest in my hands and I stared at my bare, and now slightly dirty feet curled around the dead roots of the tree. The sun beat mercilessly onto my back because of the lack of covering the massive tree once provided. I looked around a little paranoid to see if anyone... or anything was watching me then laughed a little. Who cared anyways? I stripped down and then laid completely nude on the stump, letting the sun hit every inch of my exposed skin. My eyes fluttered close but my ears were alert to any sound. I let my arms fall out to my sides and I opened my curled hands to lay flat against the browned and baked remnant-of-a-tree. A warm breeze flitted over my painfully wonderfully exposed curves.
Suddenly I stood up on the stump and balanced on one foot, twisting the other leg backwards so that I could grab my foot from behind and touch it to my head. I was surprisingly flexible after being sedentary for so long and my back twinged unpleasantly as I arched into the full position. I stood that way for a while and then raised myself up onto the ball of my foot. I teetered precariously and then righted myself. Then I let go of my foot, and while dropped a fraction of an inch it stayed, pressed against the back of my head. I reached my arms out as far as they could go and then took a deep breath, letting my leg down while lowering myself back onto the flat of my foot.
Why did I feel so graceful... powerful... alive?
I smiled a little and then sprung through a series of backflips and back hand-springs that I had never known how to do before. I danced in a circle, laughing happily, but then I stopped mid-twirl and realized who did know how to do all of those intricate maneuvers... Jade.
I rushed back to camp and shouted her name... I couldn't believe what she'd done... I was at a loss for words completely, and what would the vampire council think of me now?
She rushed into camp, her blonde hair in quite a disarray, and she spotted me, racing up to me with a look of pure worry on her face, "Sakir! Is everything ok?!"
I nodded and then shook my head, "Why did you give me your blood?!"
She sighed, "Because you needed it obviously. Your back was beginning to get infected, despite Darius's best efforts. The cut was just too deep to risk anything."
I smiled a little and wrapped her in a big hug, "Thank you very very much Jade..." She laughed in the hug, "You won't believe how many poor little deer I had to eat to make up for it." I stopped mid-laugh and looked at her, "How much blood did you give me?!"
She smiled sheepishly, "Well we wanted to be safe... so like 5 pints.."
My eyes widened, "FIVE ******** PINTS?! ARE YOU CRAZY?!"
She beamed, "Yep, but look what you can do now!"
I shook my head, "That doesn't matter! You could have DIED."
She waved my objections away and dragged me over to her tent... which seemed to have grown quite tremendously since I'd last seen it. "C'mon you have to get ready to meet the Council tonight." I grumbled but she dragged me into the depths of her tent anyways and 'made me presentable'.
As she was attacking me with all sorts of ceremonial and vampire-esque clothing she mentioned in an off-to-the-side manner, "Oh... by the way Jasper will be there."
I groaned, "Why? Seriously, why? He has no jurisdiction over me."
Jade gave me a look, "In the vampire world he does."
I threw my hands up exasperated, "So ******** someone automatically makes them your property?!"
She laughed, "No... it was just seen as though you two were together in public."
I sighed heavily, "So little 'spats' wouldn't register in their infinite ways of thinking.."
She laughed again, "Yes, I suppose you could put it that way."
She wheeled me around gave me a piece of glass to look in. I was covered in long, ornate drapes of fabric twisted about my frame in an oddly sexual way. My hair was down and made as long as it would go, twisted to one side, resting and floating over my shoulder. I raised an eyebrow and noticed something different about my face... it was lighter and more angular. I looked up at Jade and she pointed to an array of brushes and powder, "Vampire make-up. Can't put you in council looking like a healthy little werewolf now can we?"
I mumbled, "I don't see anything wrong with that."
She shook her finger, "You don't realize how vain we vampires are. Look is everything."
I sighed heavily, "Well that speaks volumes about your kind doesn't it?"
She rolled her eyes at me, "Don't be such a b***h."
I laughed and stood up, grateful to get some fresh air outside of the stuffy tent, "Can't really help that now can I?"
I strode toward the cluster of tents in the next clearing, ready to face whatever the representatives of the vampire nation as a whole had in store for me.
