Just a journal of thoughts.
The Other Woman
Erica finished cleaning the oven, then she rested against the fridge and sighed, holding her stomach. She groaned in pain and took deep breaths. Lance walked into the living room from the front door.

Lance: Erica?

Erica immediately kneeled in front of the oven and pretended to clean it.

Erica: I'm in the kitchen, Lance.
Lance: (walking into the kitchen) How is she?
Erica: She won't stop vomiting.

Erica stands up and when she turns, she sees Lindsey in the living room; the other woman.

(whispers) I can't believe you brought her here.
Lance: She's my assistant, Erica. We were going to have dinner with clients, 'till you called.
Erica: I don't understand why your "assistant" needs to go to dinner with you and your clients.
Lance: Because my wife and I are seperated.
Erica: (scoffs) I would've gone, Lance. You're still my husband.
Lance: I thought you didn't want to speak to me.
Erica: (sighs) Go see Rebecca; she wants to see you.
Lance: Okay. (walks back into the living room, to Lindsey) Make yourself at home. I won't be long.
Lindsey: Okay. (smiles)

Lance walks into Rebecca's room and closes the door. Lindsey stands in the middle of the living room, awkwardly. She looks at the pictures to avoid eye contact with Erica. Erica rolls her eyes and puts the gloves in the sink. She walks into the living room.

Erica: You want something to drink?
Lindsey: No, thank you.
Erica: (nods her head and crosses her arms) You don't need to feel awkward.
Lindsey: ...I don't.
Erica: (chuckles) Right...'cause you're not sleeping with my husband.
Lindsey: That's right.
Erica: ...You must think I'm stupid.
Lindsey: No, I don't.
Erica: Don't bullshit me.
Lindsey: (sighs) Please, Mrs. Reynolds--
Erica: Hah! You're screwing my husband, girl, you might as well call me by my name.
Lindsey: (nods head) I don't want to get into trouble.
Erica: But why would you get into trouble when you're not sleeping with him?
Lindsey: We're just going out to dinner.
Erica: Right...with a client.
Lindsey: Did you want to come?
Erica: It's my duty as the wife to join my husband in business dinners...I always have.
Lindsey: He says that you get bored during business dinners.
Erica: Yes, I do...but it's my duty...not yours. You're just the mistress. You see him after the dinner.
Lindsey: (nervous) I'm not his mistress.
Erica: Then, lover?

Lance walks out of Rebecca's bedroom with a bucket.

Lance: She threw up again.
Erica: Just leave it in the bathroom.
Lance: No, I can clean it.
Erica: Do you wanna smell like vomit at dinner?
Lance: ...Aren't you tired? You just cleaned the oven, Erica.
Erica: I'm fine. Leave it in the bathroom and bring her another bucket.
Lance: Okay.

Lance smiles at Lindsey then goes into the bathroom. Erica glances over at Lindsey and then walks into the kitchen. Lindsey walks over to Lance.

Lindsey: (whispers) She hates me.
Lance: (whispers) We'll leave soon, okay? I promise.
Lindsey: Okay...
Lance: I'm very sorry about this.
Lindsey: It's okay. (smiles at him)

Lance winks at her. Lindsey walks back into the living room and Lance follows, then walks into the kitchen, where Erica is standing resting her head over the sink.

Lance: Where can I--are you okay, Erica?

Erica gets startled and chuckles.

Erica: Yeah...it's the fumes. They got to me.
Lance: Maybe you should take a break.
Erica: Stop telling me what to do.
Lance: I'm not; I'm suggesting.
Erica: Well, stop suggesting.
Lance: All right, Erica, I don't want to fight.
Erica: Who says we're fighting?
Lance: (sighs) Where can I find a bucket?
Erica: In the hallway closet...where they've always been.

Lance walks into the hallway and gets a new bucket. Then, he walks into Rebecca's room and closes the door. Erica sighs and rubs her stomach. Lindsey walks around the living room, nervously.

Lindsey: (to herself) Please, don't let her ask me anything else.
Erica: (walking in) Sit down, Lindsey.

Erica sits on the arm chair and Lindsey on the sofa.

So...what's it like working for Lance?
Lindsey: ...Pleasant.
Erica: Nice word. (chuckles and sighs) I used to work for him, too.
Lindsey: Oh?
Erica: Yes.
Lindsey: What was it like?
Erica: It was okay...It was when he first started, you know?
Lindsey: Yeah.
Erica: So, they were different times...Different times and different wife.
Lindsey: He was married before he met you?
Erica: Mmm-hmm.
Lindsey: Oh...I didn't know that.
Erica: (chuckles) Yeah, I didn't know either 'till she called the office about a month after I started working with him. Notice how he doesn't keep pictures of his family on his desk? Never did.
Lindsey: That doesn't really mean anything, you know?
Erica: It doesn't? (chuckles) You don't think it's strange that a man doesn't keep pictures of his family on his desk?
Lindsey: Maybe he likes to separate family and business...
Erica: (chuckles) You're so naive.

Lance walks out of Rebecca's bedroom.

Lance: She's asleep, Erica.
Erica: Thank you--hey, come're, Lance. I have a question for you.
Lance: What? (stands in between Lindsey and Erica)
Erica: Why don't you have pictures of me and Rebecca on your desk?
Lance: (sighs) Well...I find pictures to be distracting.
Erica: Uh-huh. (smiles at Lindsey)
Lance: What's that smile for?
Erica: (looks at Lance) I think you're full of bullshit.
Lance: I'm not.
Erica: Yeah, I'd say that, too.
Lance: Why do you do this to yourself, Erica?
Erica: Do what?
Lance: You make things up in your head.
Erica: (chuckles) Lance, I don't make things up. I just don't understand why you can't be a man and admit that you're having an affair with your assistant.
Lance: Because I'm not having an affair with her!
Erica: Keep your damned voice down.
Lance: I'm not putting up with this, Erica.
Erica: I don't expect you to.
Lance: What the hell does that mean?
Erica: You're not man enough to accept your problems, Lance, you never were.
Lance: I don't have any problems.
Erica: Hah! When things get hard at home, you leave.
Lance: You kicked me out!
Erica: And you left! You didn't even beg!
Lance: You told me to leave you alone.
Erica: And I see now why you did. (smiles at Lindsey) You're just replacing me.
Lance: Don't listen to her, Lindsey.
Erica: Tell me, Lindsey, when did he start "chasing" after you?
Lance: Stop it!
Erica: About a month ago?
Lance: Shut up, Erica, you're only hurting yourself.
Erica: That's when I found out that I had cancer...did he tell you about that? (chuckles) He probably did and ran into your arms for comfort.
Lance: Let's go, Lindsey.
Erica: (to Lance) You think I'm stupid like your first wife...I'm not, Lance.
Lance: I never said you were stupid.
Erica: But you think it, Lance.
Lance: I don't think that, Erica. I love you.
Erica: (begins to cry) I wish I could believe you.
Lance: I do, baby.

Lindsey looks away from them, as Lance kneels in front of Erica.

Erica: Don't, Lance.
Lance: Baby, come on, you need me here.
Erica: I've been fine on my own, Lance. I don't need you.
Lance: Then why all this?
Erica: Because it's wrong, Lance, except you don't see that, do you? Why have one when you can have two?
Lance: Baby, stop torturing yourself.
Erica: (sighs) Stop calling me that and you can keep your key.
Lance: ...What do you mean?

Erica walks to a side table and takes out a yellow envelope. Then, she hands it to Lance.

Erica: Sign these and send them to my lawyer.

Lance can't believe it.

I'm tired of waiting for you to man up and divorce me...so I'm forced to take the first step.

Lance stands up and takes the envelope.

(sighs and turns to Lindsey) It was nice to see you again, Lindsey. Have a nice life.

Erica walks to Rebecca's room and closes the door behind her. Lance stares at the envelope in awe. They walk outside into the hallway and Lindsey turns to Lance.

Lindsey: I'm giving you my two weeks notice.
Lance: But why?
Lindsey: I'm sorry...We shouldn't have done anything in the first place.
Lance: But--
Lindsey: Goodbye.

Lindsey walks out and Lance sighs, staring at the envelope. He looks up at the door and places his hand on it.

The End.
